Body
I started by tubular casting on for 100% of my K number = 158. I have larger hips, and the tubular cast-on can be tight, so I didn’t do any reductions for the ribbing. I worked in K1P1 rib for 1.25”.

The sweater is 19” long before joining the arms. I did two decrease rounds (4 stitches decreased each round) before the sweater was 12” long (narrowest part of my waist), and then increased two rounds in the next 7”.

Sleeves
Sleeves were cast on tubular as well. 40 stiches, K1P1 for 1.25”, then started increase two stitches every 6th round. If I did it again, I’d increase every 7th or 8th round instead for a more gradual taper. After reaching 52 stitches on each sleeve, they were knit even until the sleeves measure 20”. I knit them at the same time using two long circulars, using the two-at-a-time technique.

Yoke
After joining the sleeves to the body (leaving 12% of K on stitch holders at the underarms on both body and sleeve for grafting later), I knit one round, then purled one round, and then broke the yarn. I found the middle of the front, moved over about two stitches and rejoined the yarn. After I had knit all the stitches in the row, I cast on ten additional stitches, and proceeded to knit back and forth in garter stitch.

I put in a yarnover button hole every 8th round on the left side of the placket, and after the yoke was 3.5” deep, I did my first K1,K2tog yoke decrease round. I made sure this was on the first RS row after a buttonhole. I knit 8 more rounds (including the next buttonhole round), and decreased again in K1,K2tog fashion. I knit 6 more rounds in garter, ending with the WS row after a button hole.

On the next RS row, I started short rows along the back half of the sweater. I did Sunday short rows as described in Paper Dolls. As I was working in garter, I did not “hide” the wraps. They looked better visible, more like purl bumps. This hint was in Spoked Cardigan. I worked 8 rows using wraps (4 RS and 4 WS). After these I simply knit 2 rounds and then cast off on the RS by Slip 1, * K2, pass first knit stitch over last knit stitch, repeat from .

Finishing

I wet blocked with Eucalan, laid to dry on the spare bed under fans, and the next day sewed on buttons from my favorite antique shop.

Note about the Yarn

My grandmother used to work at Evie Rosen’s yarn shop in Wausau, Wi, The Knitting Nook. A couple of years ago, my Grandma gave me a lot of her stash. This discontinued yarn was one of the things she gifted me.
