Notes

The name is because I’m doing some changes to the pattern (tree, set in sleeves, etc.) and the tighter cables seem more of Rohan than Rivendell to me. Besides, I like Éowyn (and Faramir has always been a favorite from the books) so, this is Éowyn after Gondor.

The tree chart was generously shared by dragoncrafter and I used it for my Tree of Gondor, adding a couple of branches at the end. Color is truest in last (skein) pic.

I gotta say that finishing this tree has made me a better knitter. In fact, no longer am I Jacquelyn the Brown, but, Jacquelyn the Grey… well, you know what I mean. ;)

Here at the end of all things… Some final notes on this project:

I used Ann Budd’s set-in sleeve pattern from the Handy Book of Sweater Patterns with the cable from Kate Gilbert’s Arwen sweater.

The entire sweater is in reverse stockinette in keeping with the back and I like the rustic sort of look it provides. It also reminds me a bit of the fabric on the overdress Éowyn wore on the way to Helm’s Deep in the movies.

I left the cabled bands off the sleeves as I found them distracting from the overall sweater. Also I made the hood much smaller. This was to prevent it hanging down too much and covering up the tree on the back. So though it fits, it isn’t large or drapish.

This was a very fun project! I learned a lot and I reacquainted myself with the LOTR. Not only did I watch all the extended versions of the movies, but I listened to the unabridged audio books while working on this sweater. I’d forgotten how much I enjoyed this story!

Thanks for looking! :)

answers to the questions I’ve received regarding this cardi are posted at the end

2.16 Done!

2.15 Finished last of the seaming but I must’ve over stretched the arms when I blocked them because they both sorta “bloused” while seaming them. I’m trying to fix them with a bit of blocking right now, so hope that works. Only thing that remains is to hem the sleeves (If I don’t have to redo the sleeve seams). Yay!

2.13 Hood finished and grafted. I think it belongs to a garden gnome! Must block! Just a bit of finishing left, hems, etc. Yay!

2.10 Soon my precious…

2.9 Working on the hood.

2.8 Right front done! Blocking fronts and back before casting on the hood.

2.6 Completed arm hole shaping on right front.

2.4 Finished second sleeve.

2.2 Began right front, finished increases on second sleeve.

2.1 Finished left front.

1.30 Did armhole shaping on left front, added a couple inches to second sleeve.

1.29 I’m beginning to feel a little like I’m working on a bathrobe! I’m at 17” on the left front, 3” on second sleeve. Probably would have more done, but decided I should watch LOTR again while working on this and I’m easily distracted.

1.28 I lost a day somewhere…finished first sleeve, about 7 inches into left front.

1.26 Finished back and cast on left front.

1.25 Began shaping arm holes, finished increases on first sleeve.

1.21 About half way through the back. Thank goodness my purling has gotten faster!

1.19 Began chart on back, completed a bit more on the first sleeve.

1.18 Cast on a sleeve. Wanted something a little mindless to work on.

1.11 Cast on for the back, knit hem band and project to the where the cables need to start. Finally started this and finished up the project details in me brain. Yay!

12.23 I may end up hibernating this one until the estes is complete. I don’t know if I have the brainage to work on two projects at once…

Christmas knitting is done. Yay! Swatch completed.

Thank you so much everyone for the kind comments! Here’s some answers to questions I’ve received regarding this cardi:

--Button/clasp came from an online shop. I did an internet search for “celtic brooch” and came up with several options. This brooch is reportedly a design from the Book of Kells and several shops carried it. I could see Eowyn wearing a Rohan-esque brooch while living with her Prince in Ithilien.

--Chart mods were done as I went along. No real mods occurred until the end when I looked again at the banner that Arwen held at the end of the movie ROTK (pic to the left). When I compared “my” tree to the one on the standard, I could see where I could add some more leaves to the tree tops and even another couple of branches.

Dragoncrafter/Ariel had devised her chart for the front of her Rogue sweater so her tree actually goes up into the collar of the v-neck on the Rogue. Also, if you look at her finished tree, you see a couple of differences on her sweater than what she later charted.

Here’s a couple of great examples of the completed tree as it was charted:

tree of gondor throw by lilaclinny and
Tree Jacket by chamaecyparis

--For the hood construction, I kept all stitches live until it was time to work on the hood. I then did decreases to line up along the shoulder seam every 4 to 6 rounds. I just kept trying it on as I went along.

I very nearly decreased too much and ended up increasing again a couple of times near the end. The pics show the point tucked under to show the tree, but it really hangs down over the top of the tree.

--The audiobook I listened to was this one: LOTR and not only did it keep me entertained on this sweater, but on many long drives back and forth through the desert.

I hope that helps (and makes sense)! Thanks again everyone! :)
