I got some requests for baby pussyhats, so I made a couple…and then I posted them on Facebook, which sparked requests for more. I based my baby pussyhats (kittenhats, of course) on Woolly Wormhead’s excellent Pinion pattern, so I decided they need their own project page.
Yarn totals are included on the Part 3 project page. I’m not weighing and recording yarn use after every hat.
Every hat gets worked a little differently. Notes for each appear below.
My first batch of hats, the ones that went to that first amazing march, are on their own project page, Pussies Grab Back.
My second batch of hats--the first dozen requests that came in after the Women’s March--have another project page, Pussyhats Part 2: From Moment to Movement.
My third batch of hats--because the requests just kept coming--are in yet another project page, Pussycat, Pussyhat: Pink Cat Hats Part 3.
The fourth and final batch of pussyhats can be found in Pussyhat Nation: Pink Cat Hats Part IV.
Hat 34 Sawyer
WM Pure, Fuchsia and Tutu medium
Since this is worked top-down and sewn up afterward, I used Judy’s Magic Cast On to eliminate the sewing. I worked Walker’s Two-Color lattice stitch instead of the suggested slipped-stitch pattern, and used heavier yarn so a different gauge. CO for smallest size but used length measurements for next larger size.
Started on US3 needles, but after a few rounds realized it was way too tight and jumped to US5. Worked band around face with US4 (but a slightly firmer fabric might have been preferable).
Added the blanket stitch detail around the brim as in the pattern. A royal pain to get it nice and even on stretchy garter stitch, but it looks so good it’s worth the effort.
Hat 35 Rhys
Created an intermediate size between the 6 mos and 1 year sizes, started out with Judy’s Magic Cast On to eliminate the sewing at the top, and altered the shape of the garter brim somewhat, but used the slipped-stitch pattern for the body as written. I’m really happy with this one!
Worked body on US4 needles, then switched to US3 for the brim. Probably could have gone down to US2.
Blanket stitch trim on this one too. I tried to make it a little less regular on this one, and I like it better this way.
Hat 39 Kaia (Amy’s DD2)
For a 9-year-old
This one is not based on Pinion. It’s a standard pussyhat, just smaller.
Color A: WM Twin Fuchsia; Color B: Wollmeise Twin Tutu dark; Color C: WM Pure Clementine; Color D: WM Pure Tutu light.
With Color D and US4, CO 84 sts.
Work in k1, p2 rib for about an inch.
Knit one round, increasing 12 sts evenly (96 sts).
Begin Walker’s Four-Color Fancy Pattern, working until piece measures 8 inches.
BO on WS using 3-needle BO.
Hat 40 Leo, Amy’s DS
For a 2yo. Made 3rd size, although at a different gauge because I’m using fingering held double.
WM Pure Kneif Mich, Tutu Dark, and Tutu Light; WM Twin Tortchen.
This one follows the Pinion pattern closely, except I used Judy’s Magic Cast On instead of sewing the top shut at the end.
