Notes

Here it is the end of March and I am still knitting pink hats! People keep asking for them…and somehow it feels meaningful to continue providing them.

I’ve started a fourth pussyhat project page for my own convenience. It’s simply too unwieldy to scroll down down down when I need info from a previous hat to start the next one.

ETA: 48 is enough! I’m done! (At least for the time being.)

My first batch of hats, the ones that went to that first amazing march, are on their own project page, Pussies Grab Back.

My second batch of hats--the first dozen requests that came in after the Women’s March--have another project page, Pussyhats Part 2: From Moment to Movement.

My third batch of hats, up to Number 40, are in yet another project page, Pussycat, Pussyhat: Pink Cat Hats Part 3.

The littlest hats have their own project page, Kittenhats.

YARN HELD DOUBLE THROUGHOUT

German twisted CO used for every hat.

Hat 41 Maria S

WM Twin Tortchen, VG Eidos, ELC magenta

With US3, CO 102, work k2, p1 rib for an inch or so.

Knit one round, increasing 6 stitches evenly (108 sts).

Switch to US5, work Walker Two-Tone Lattice Stitch until piece measures 8 1/4 inches.

Finish on Row 4 or 8; knit all stitches in that round. BO on WS using 3-needle BO.

Should have decreased to account for slipped stitches--top of hat is wavy. (But it’s fine after blocking.)

Lattice stitch is very firm and draws in a lot--next time increase by another pattern repeat (6 sts) before starting the lattice section. A bigger needle size would have helped, too. For some reason I was using US5 when I thought I was using US7. Apparently I was in a knitting fog.

I absolutelylove* the look of this stitch. It isn’t very stretchy and it takes me forever to knit it (it’s easy to knit and easy to memorize, but it goes slowly for me), but it’s worth the effort! It is delightfully dimensional.*

Hat 42 Shelley J

WM Pure Tutu Light

CO 108 US4, worked k2,p2 rib for about 1 inch, changed mind about plans for hat, shifted to k3, p1 rib for another inch, changed mind again, worked Walker’s Carved Diamond twisted stitch pattern (book 2, p.15) until work measured 8 1/4 inches.

This pattern requires close attention, and it goes slowly. It’s also extremely beautiful. Once I identified “anchor stitches” to track the pattern across the row and started using tick boxes to track row repeats, it went a lot more smoothly. It’s an incredibly beautiful stitch pattern.
I quite like to the accidental two-tier ribbing effect.

Hat 43 Lisa Bayer 2

Fuchsia, Tutu Dark, Tutu Medium, Tutu Light, Clementine, PP5 Light, Babe (using up scraps)

With US4, CO 108 sts, work K2,p1 rib until done. Lots of stripes.

I love this one!

Hat 44

With US4, CO 108 sts, work K2,p1 rib until done. Tortchen/Tutu Light stripes.

Great color combo!

Hat 44+ Eva Abdullah’s mom

WM Pure Kneif Mich; Tutu Dark, Medium, Light.

CO 100 sts US3.
Work k2, p1 rib for 1.5 inches.
Knit one round, increasing 14 sts evenly spaced (114 sts).
Switch to US7 and work Walker’s Two-Tone Lattice until piece measures 8.5 inches. BO with 3-needle BO.

114 sts on US7 makes for a nice sized hat that has a bit more “give” than the smaller one I made earlier. It’s a full repeat (6 sts) bigger than the previous one and that, combined with the larger needle size (US7 as opposed to US5 used previously) makes an important difference.

The Tutu gradient doesn’t show up as well as I’d like. I would prefer a darker color for the lattice.

Hat 46 John Hirschle

WM Pure Baba Jaga

With US4, CO 117 sts. Work k2, p1 rib until 9.25 inches.

This hat, although plenty big, is not as big as I thought it would be. The Baba Jaga is delightful!

Hat 47

WM Twin Tortchen

with US4, CO 99 sts, work K1, p2 rib for 1.5 inches
work stockinette until 6 inches
work K2, p1 rib until 8 1/4 inches
BO using 3-needle BO

I’m obsessed with Tortchen.

Hat 48 Eva Abdullah

WM Pure Kneif Mich, Baba Jaga, Tutu Light
WM Twin Tortchen

with US4, CO 99 sts, work K1, p2 rib for 1.5 inches
work stockinette until 8 1/4 inches
BO using 3-needle BO

Tortchen and Baba Jaga look amazing together!
