Notes

It says this takes 350 yards but I hope I’ve got enough at 325 yards of stash Chickadee - especially since I’ve added 17 extra rows in the cuff / ankle portion because I wanted a longer leg. I know it seems unlikely but I’m using a smaller needle and I generally find that socks take less yarn than advertised. I guess time will tell.

So far, the cabling is a pain in the ass the way cabling always is. But sometimes you need to a) use your stash yarn to b) have something on the spot to knit and c) learn another pattern.

This pattern easily knits up with 200 yards of Chickadee - including a longer cuff by 17 rows of the cable pattern. If I were to make this again, I’d do 36 rows of the cable (effectively making the cuff 36 rows longer than the pattern calls for. It will still be a reasonably short cuff. I imagine that would require 250 yards…

Having said this, this is a really strange looking pair of socks, pre-blocking. They look a bit elfen. I hope that blocking will improve the finished look because, on the foot, they’re not bad looking. Just too short.

PS: I really don’t love cabling. It never gets easier and every time you make a mistake it’s a pain in the ass to fix. But they look so pretty at the end. This is a way to get the look without doing something as large as a sweater (and it’s not a fingering weight sock so, all the easier).

Oh well - I put these in the dryer (forgetting that they’re not made of superwash wool) and they became ski socks for a 6 year old. Note: Never put Quince yarn in the dryer. Interestingly, the socks didn’t felt or pill, but they shrank by half. Gave them to Maia, Jeanette’s daughter and she liked them a lot. Fit her perfectly (and she was 6).
