I’ve opted to use a US 5 because I’ve taken gauge of 2 of the 3 yarns previously (J&S and Lamana - see project pages via stash page for details) and they will work best re: pattern gauge. I’m not swatching, I just want a fabric I’ll like and I don’t want this to be too small.

C1 - Como (Beige)
C2 - J&S (Grey) / Late add on J&S (Katmollet, pale grey beige)
C3 - Amble (Heathered Brown)

I’m dismayed that C2 requires more yarn than recommended (at least in my shawl, I’ll have to measure gauge to confirm that mine’s not wildly off but it shouldn’t be based on my gauge with this yarn on previous occasions). I wouldn’t care if I had more of the J&S Grey I’m making this project to stash bust. I could prob get more but that’s not how stash-busting works!

Instead I’ve opted to keep the yarn theme going with J&S, using a yarn that’s mid way between beige and grey - so a perfect merge of the Como, J&S grey and the Amble heathered brown. I hope the colours will blend without looking “scrappy”.

But I have another problem. Since I used ~21g on stripe 7 (and only got to 16st of the 21-stitch new panel, hence the need for the intro of the Katmollet) AND since I’ve only got 24g of the Como, to be used on stripe 9 (which will require more yarn than stripe 7), I’ve got to figure out a way to manage the scarf going forward.

Note A:
21g of J&S 203 = 105 yards
24g of Lamana = 125 yards

Note B:
Stripe 9 takes more yarn than stripe 7 (or stripe 8), so the extra 20 yards probably only accounts for the diff between stripe 7 and stripe 8/9. Given that you don’t get 2/3 of the way through stripe 7 with the J&S, you won’t get through more than 2/3 of stripe 8/9 with the Como.

Option 1: Finish stripe 7 with Katmollet colourway, do stripe 8 with the Amble (as instructed), do the final stripe 9 in Como and bind off when you get through approx 10 st in the new panel, to leave enough of it left to do the icord bindoff. Will make the final panel notably shorter than the others (though that might not be a problem) and the entire shawl shorter than it would be if I had enough yarn to finish the stripe (that probably is a problem, this thing isn’t looking overly long half way through stripe 7).

Option 2:Finish stripe 7 with Katmollet colourway. Do stripe 8 with the Como / C1 (this stripe takes less yarn than stripe 9, though you still won’t have enough). Do stripe 9 using the Amble / C3.

How to manage not having enough of C1 for stripe 8:Depending on how much of the Katmollet you have left at the end of stripe 7 (you started off with 14g), if you have at least 7g left, you can START stripe 8 by continuing with C2 (Katmollet at this point) until it runs out. Hopefully it’ll get you 6 stitches into the new panel because, if it does, it’s likely to give you enough of the como to get through the full 21-st panel stripe.

Option 3: Finish stripe 7 with Katmollet colourway. Start stripe 8 with C1. When it runs out, continue with the C3 (effectively, make the final block of brown colour thicker - I expect to have enough of this colour to go this route). Could work but will really make the brown panels thick - it’ll take away from the neutrality I was looking for.

Option 4: Finish stripe 7 with Katmollet colourway. Start stripe 8 with C3, as instructed. Continue into stripe 9 with C3 until you get about 6-8 stitches on the new panel. Then finish stripe 9 with C1, as instructed. It will be thinner than instructed but the shawl won’t be reduced in size

Option 5: Like option 1 except use all 14g of the Katmollet, to get to approx 6 stitches into the new panel (stripe 8). Then use the C3 for 42R (the depth of every colour stripe), which will bring you into stripe 9. Finish stripe 9, as instructed, with C1. Given that you have done ~12R of this stripe with C3, you should have enough with the 24g to finish the panel to get to the end of stripe 9. This will preserve the length of the shawl and provide a good colour combo, presuming the Katmollet melds in the scarf.

Went with Option 5 and I’m pleased with the choice.

Were I to make this scarf again for scrap busting reasons: Note that you can make the colour stripes of any width as long as you begin the new panel every 42 rows (or 21 st to the panel). It doesn’t look strange and this makes the pattern very scrap-using friendly. As of stripe 7, the full 42R takes 24g and then that number increases with stripes 8 and 9. So you might want to make each stripe 20 or 22 R (~12g at stripe 7) or make each stripe 14R (42/3 is 14 - ~8g at stripe 7)

Thing to note: This shawl is NOT reversible and, with high contrast colour changes, the wrong side is quite visibly the wrong side.

For stripe 9:

I have 125 yards / 24 g of the como left. Given that each row is taking 3.1 yards, that means I can get 40 rows out of this yardage.

I’m going to assume that the icord BO will take 2 rows worth of yarn. Before this, there are 2 final rows. So 40 rows minus 4 = 36R. This pattern has a 2 row repeat (RT right-side and slip-stich wrong-side).

So - I will get 18 RT stitches (over 36R) before I begin the BO. It will be shorter than the 21st panel stripes but stripe 8 was 34R in depth (I felt it would be too brown at full recommended yardage), so the final 2 stripes will more or less match in terms of width/depth.

12-01-2021

Preblocked: ~50.5” (at longest point) x 26.5” (at deepest point). I ran out of yarn a bit early, and I didn’t check gauge. I’m optimistic that this will block out to closer to 55” longest length, in which case my shawl will be more or less the same size as the pattern indicates.

I have 1g of the (exceedingly light-weight) Lamana Como remaining.

KristinM100's adjectives for this yarn
  1. Fascinating texture. Very light and airy, though not in a woolen-spun way. But it must have been carded...
  2. The colours are very matte, almost chalky, prob because of how this yarn prep takes dye.
  3. This really is tremendously soft and quite warm.

KristinM100's adjectives for this yarn
  1. Very soft, very drapy - it grows a lot once blocked
  2. Did not wear well - holes appeared quickly / Wouldn't use for socks again / This yarn will felt if put in the dryer (but that may help to stabilize the stitches if you only do it once)
  3. There's something very slippery about it, prob re: superwash treatment, and it doesn't work well on US1 needles (it splits). US 1.5 to US 2 work well. Since you can't put it in the dryer (as far as I know), this won't be a go-to yarn.
