Notes

I made this in the smallest size for my nine year old niece for her First Holy Communion (along with a sweet little drawstring purse to match.) Blocked the shawlette to 17” down the center but only 38” across as I liked the look better and seemed a better length for nine year old. Be sure to check the errata if you’re working from the charts, as some copies (like mine which I purchased and downloaded via Ravelry) have an error in the first part of Chart A. Other than that, I absolutely LOVe this pattern. Very quick and fun to knit. So sweet and lovely to look at. I look forward to making one for me!

4/29/13: Finished the purse to match, snapped some pics, and sent out today.

4/28/13: Bought a new (and cheap) iron and it steams way better than my steamer, so finally blocked. Just need to finish the i-cords strings for the purse, and take some pics and it will be ready to send to Faith.

4/27/13: My steamer is useless, so I wasn’t able to block (kill) it. I’ve been making a little drawstring purse with the same lace pattern to go with the shawl.

4/24/13: Finished and ends sewn in. I just have to block! Hopefully I can have this sent out by Friday or Saturday. The big event isn’t until the 4th, but I’d like it in my sister’s hands in plenty of time.

Love the pattern and am definitely going to make one in a larger size for myself!

Be careful if you’ve downloaded from Ravelry -- there is an error on the RH Edging of row 1 on Chart A, but the written instructions are correct: BO4, k5.

Found another in my copy of the pattern: In the last row, it states there will be 16 stitches remaining on the needle, and then describes separating 8 stitches each on two dpns for kitchenering. I believe it should be 18 stitches and 9 on each needle. Not that it makes a difference to finishing the piece.

4/24/13: I’ve made it to row 20 of the third and last repeat of Chart A. I should finish Chart A and move to Chart B later tonight. I’d love to have finished and mailed out by the weekend.

So far I really love this pattern! It moves so quickly and is easy. I was intimidated by lace and shawls, but this has been so much fun to knit. This is also the first time I’ve used a chart, and I have to say that I love it. It moves so much quicker than following written instruction.

I did encounter one problem, in that the chart had an error in row 1, chart A. The written instruction is correct, so I’ve been able to recover. I took the lazy way to recover -- instead of tinking back, I tried to carefully undo just the RH edging section and re-knit them correctly, then return to where I left off at the end of Row 2. I realize that my rows 1 and 2 may be wonky, as by knitting those stitches incorrectly initially, my stitches in row 1 were not necessarily in the right alignment with row 24 of the first repeat. I can’t really tell how noticeable it will be. Hopefully it won’t be too horrible once I’ve blocked this out.

I really, really, hate the yarn. I didn’t have any other choice, as my LYSes were closed and I coudn’t wait for something to be shipped. Actually, I visited both LYS this past weekend and they didn’t have anything more suitable. Nothing in fingering or lace weight in an appropriate color at LYS #1, and LYS #2 only had one option -- and it was this very same yarn.

The Beehive Baby Fingering is so very splitty. Perhaps more than CSS. I had to start over once because a huge knot of a mess came out of the skein and the yarn tore apart when trying to undo the knot. I’d already spent a couple hours trying to unknot, and figured I’d be able to start over quicker than I’d be able to undo the knot. When it broke apart I knew it was time to throw in the towel and start fresh from another skein.

Now that I’m nearly done with the chart A repeats and the length is several inches, it look nice and is soft, so the end product isn’t terrible. But knitting with it is not pleasant.

Update on hating the yarn: I still hate it, even moreso. I knit up a little drawstring purse to match the shawl, and planned to use my favorite method for making the cord in order to avoid the time and effort i-cord would take. Only, this yarn will not slide at all, no matter how loosely I make the slip knot. Not the tiniest bit. I was forced to make i-cord. blech.

4/16/13: Used size 4 needle tips with Lace Cast On and the setup row before switching to size 3 needles.

This will be my first lace shawl. Other Ravelers’ project notes say this is a fast, easy and fun knit, so I hope I have the same experience. I hope to finish quickly, in time to send to my niece, Faith, for her First Holy Communion in the beginning of May. If this is a success, and if I have a day or two to spare, I may make a drawstring bag with the lily of the valley motif to go along with it.

After receiving my sister’s invitation for Faith’s upcoming First Communion, I ran out last night and tried to find some decent lace or fingering yarn that would do for a shawl. Too late for a LYS (the only two around here are closed by 5,) I had limited choices with the chain craft stores and Walmart. I picked the Beehive Baby Fingering up, and chose the Vintage Lace colorway over pure white. It should do. I’d prefer it not to be acrylic, but it’s fine for a child. I’ll likely finish it by killing it.

I’m so glad I recently ordered some 32” fixed circs in size 3 from Knitpicks, as I didn’t previously own any size 3’s. The needle options at the local stores are truly a horror. But I’m all set. Got my size 3’s, my metal ring stitchmarkers, and yarn. The last thing I picked was which pattern I would use!

I love the look of this, and if Faith’s shawl is as pleasurable a knit as I’ve been led to believe, then I plan to make a larger size for myself.
