Notes

Finally blocked this. I’ve not worn it yet as it’s been too warm. I do like it better blocked. I think I will block it even harder next time. I still need to take pics of the blocked finished item.

4/15: Off the needles! Just a single end to weave in. I chose an i-cord bind off, my first time with this technique. I’d read project notes from many others who’d used this bind off, so I thought i’d give it a try. I have to say, I really love the look of it. It looks great on both sides, too. The WS doesn’t look like an i-cord so much as just a really neat edge.

After completing the wedges, I knit across, removing the markers, then knit one more row before doing the i-cord bind off. I wasn’t sure how much yarn it would take, and I wasn’t sure if I’d like the look of the additional 3 rows prior to the i-cord edge. I probably would have had enough yarn to knit 2 or 3 more rows after all, but I still don’t know if I’d like the look of them. I think it looks great just as I finished it.

I’m not sure if I will/can block this. The yarn is 70/30 wool/nylon. I don’t know if it will block with the nylon, so I have some research to do. I think it looks nice already, perfect for something to throw around me with casual outfits, so I may just go with it. Then again, I like the look of some other wingspans that have been blocked to have the pointy tips.

I’ll have to take and put up some picture later, pre-washing/blocking.

I-Cord Bind Off Tutorial

4/12 I finished the first 4 rows of the 11th, and what will be the final, wedge. Even though I’ve already added an extra skein, part of me wants to still get another and add 4 more wedges. But I am resisting. I have other projects to get to. Besides, I’m getting anxious to be able to wear this. Maybe ill be able to finish tomorrow or by the end of the weekend at least.

4/9: I did manage to complete the 8th wedge, but would not have enough yarn for 4 rows across and bindoff. I connected my extra ball and plan to do 2-3 more wedges before binding off.

Even though this yarn is already in a center-pull skein and doesn’t need winding, I decided to wind it into a ball anyway. (I’ve lately become entranced with the idea of a Nostepinne, and wanted to try it out.) I don’t have a Nostepinne, but I thought I’d give it a try using a drumstick. It was interesting. The result is more of a football shape than a cake -- I think I need to build up more of the middle. I’m going to keep practicing. I normally just wind by hand using my thumb, which doesn’t bother me. But if I could make those neat cake-shapes, then I’d like to master the Nostepinne.

4/8: I have started the eighth wedge. I definitely will need to use the third skein of this yarn. I may be abe to eke out the 8th eighth wedge, but I doubt I’ll have enough for the final rows and bind-off. I think I’ll want to go with more wedges anyway. I’m going to shoot for eleven. I hope the different dye lot won’t be noticeable.

I have been looking through all of the thousands of projects for inspiration for my next Wingspan. I will be making more.

3/24: I’m close to half finished. I love this pattern -- it looks great and so easy. Just the perfect thing for a travel or TV watching project. I started this as a quick knit while I wait for my yarn for my next project to be delivered. I’m using some RH Heart & Sole from my stash -- I love the colors, and I just love how it looks for this pattern.

Used Cable Cast-on. I had to rip back and restart on Day 2, when I dropped some stitches and my attempt at repairing failed.

After reading project notes from other Ravelers, I decided to wrap for the short rows but not knit the wrap. I haven’t really done short rows before so I followed a tutorial on youtube, but I don’t know if I’m doing it correctly. I figure as long as I’m consistent with how I do it on each row 3 that it will be fine. It looks pretty cool so far, as I’m close to finishing the fourth wedge.

I hope I’ll have enough of this yarn to finish my eight wedges. I think I should, but I picked up another skein just in case. It’s a different dye lot, so I hope I won’t have to use it. Then again, I may decide to use it anyway, should I wish to make it longer.
