I knit the toe-up version.

My gauge was 9 sts/inch instead of 8 sts/inch so I followed the instructions for the 9” circumference for a finished foot circumference of 8”.

I decided to work a princess foot instead of a princess sole because I didn’t want to do that much purling. I knit the foot and heel inside out. When I finished the heel flap I was positioned at the start of the instep with the RS facing.

I started the instep rib at the point where the top of my shoes end and the sock instep is visible because I thought a ribbed instep may be uncomfortable in my shoes.

-CO 20 sts using Judy’s Magic Cast On, knit 1 rnd
-Inc. every rnd 5 times and every other rnd 8 times - 72 sts
-Knit until sock measures 4.5”
-Reverse rib (k1, p3) over 1st 37 sts, knit rem 35 sts
-Work until foot measures 5.125” (9 rnds)
-Inc. 24 sts for gusset (instead of 28) - 96 sts
-Work heel turn and heel flap in stockinette
-Join in the rnd, p2tog, rib instep, ssk, knit heel flap sts, dec. 4 sts at center back - 68 sts
-Work in rib until leg measures 5.5”
-K1, P1 rib for 1.5”
-BO using Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off
