Notes

I knit the center stitch of the eyelet panel through the back loop on RS rows and purled through the back loop on WS rows. That was the only way I could get a normal looking stitch.

My row gauge was off (9 rows per inch instead of 8 rows per inch) so I worked 67 armhole rows instead of 65. For the back armhole I repeated the first two rows 30 times instead of 29 times, and for the front armholes I repeated the first two rows 8 times instead of 7 times.

I wanted a 16” long cardigan instead of 18”. I worked the body even (underarm cast on section) for 16 rows instead of 18 rows before the waist decreases for a total of 54 body rows instead of 56. I worked the rib for 2.5” (20 rows) instead of 3” (24 rows).

I like the look of the slightly looser fitting long sleeves but since I plan to wear this as a warm weather cardigan I wanted a tighter, shorter sleeve. My sleeves have an upper arm circumference of 12”, lower arm circumference of 9”, and are 12” long.

Sleeves:

  • picked up 77 sts and worked the sleeve cap per the size S directions
  • omitted the first and last eyelet panels closest to the underarm seam and worked those stitches in garter
  • decreased 2 sts at the underarm seam on rounds 2 and 4 (73 sts)
  • started decreases on round 18 instead of 20
  • decreased every 4 rounds per pattern, starting with decrease round 2
  • decreased remaining garter panels to 3 sts, as directed for larger sizes (55 sts, 86 rounds)
  • worked 3 rounds even (89 rounds, 10” long)
  • 2” rib (16 rounds)

I went down a needle size for the button band and picked up 246 stitches. (55 sts for each center front + 43 sts for each front neck + 50 sts for back neck)

I made eyelet buttonholes instead of bound off buttonholes and I used five buttons instead of four. (Buttonhole Row: rib 5, yo, k2tog, (rib 10, yo, k2tog) 4 times)

I used five 5/8” buttons from lotsofbuttons.com.

I used Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off for the body and sleeve ribbing.

Measurements:

  • Bust: 33”
  • Waist: 25”
  • Length: 16”
  • Body Length: 8”
  • Armhole Length: 8”
  • Cross Back Width: 14”
  • Sleeve Length: 12”
  • Upper Arm: 12”
  • Lower Arm: 9”

Total Cost: $9.24

  • Yarn: $7.47
  • Buttons: $1.77
