IntSweMoDo2011 # 8

I’m Like a Bird by Nelly Furtado

Gauge 22 st. and 29 rows in 4 in.x4in. in St. st. using US 5 needles, blocked sample.

12.15.11. I bought this pattern back in 2010, but somehow never got around to knitting this wonderful cardigan :-)) I really love the shape of it. It is a perfect shape for me to wear to work and to run errands on weekend.
I am adding some cables to the collar, sleeves and bottom edge.

12.17.11 Some pictures of the progress :)) I am following size M in the pattern. The cardigan coming along a little bigger then I usually knit. I do love well fitted knits, but in the case of this cardigan I will just go with the pattern style to get the loose fitting everyday cardi to wear with jeans :-))

My changes so far:
1.I omitted last tree increases in “before separation for the sleeves”“ section.
2.Knitted second part of the collar from the Provisional CO of the first half.
3.Substituted reverse st. st in collar bands to cables.
4.Omitted the collar edging as described in the pattern. It did not look right with cables and pooled the edge a lot.

Blogged here.

12.29.11 Cardigan is finished. I am very happy with an outcome. Pictures and notes on my mods after New Year :))
Picture of the blue bird was taken by me yesterday at the San Diego Zoo. For more pictures go to my blog.

01.01.12

More of my mods:

  1. For the collar CO 26 sts ( 1 edge + 24 sts cable pattern + 1 edge)

  2. Cable pattern:

row1 (RS): P2, K4

row2 (WS): K2, P4

row3: P2, slip two sts to the cable needle in front of work, knit next 2 stitches, then return 2 slipped stitches back on the left needle and knit them.

row4: K2, P4

row5: P2, K4

row6: K2, P4

row7: P2, slip two sts to the cable needle behind work, knit next 2 stitches, then return 2 slipped stitches back on the left needle and knit them.

row8: K2, P4

  1. when separated for sleeves I CO underarm stitches on waste yarn so it is easier to pick up later and it looks neater.

  2. I knitted sleeves flat and then seamed them. When knitting sleeves, I had 69 stitches at the beginning, decreased by 2st x 6 and before starting the cable pattern on the cuff added 15 stitches.

  3. for the body after sleeves, I increased by 1 st every 10-11 row for each front half. Also just before the cable border I added 50 stitches.

I love the cardi :)) It is loose fitting, but I do love this fit for this particular style. Sleeves stretched a tiny bit after blocking, but I think I just leave them like that.
I learned few new things while knitting this cardigan. Among them knitting 2x2 cables without cable needle and using a different BO method from my usual one for a nicer finish.
