Notes from a shawl previously known as: Wedgie Burger

I am currently rethinking the name. As this shawl has been inspired by dragon wings and butterfly wings, I’d like the title to reflect that. My original thoughts are below, however upon further reflection, naming this after my mom might not be a good idea. She has said, “I hate butterflies. If you rip the wings off, they are just bugs.”

So, I am enjoying this shawl thing….So maybe I should get a shawl pin? That would be logical. And I’m loving the short rows thing…So I decided to try one more shawl of my own design…This one made of ‘wedges.’ I plan on making three different wedge patterns and then it is up to the knitter in which order they want their wedges. You can use all the same wedge, repeating the wedges in any order you want randomly or have a set repeat pattern. They are completely interchangable.

Why Wedgie Burger for the name? Well…the wedge part of the design is obvious but for the rest….here is the back story: There is a long tragic story about the ‘Wedgie Burger’ in my family…My mom was in a restaurant and the man ahead of her ordered a beautiful sandwich and when she asked what he had ordered he told her it was a ‘Wedgie Burger.’ She said it looked so delicious she changed her mind at the last minute and decided to order what he did. When she was asked for her order she politely asked for a ‘Wedgie Burger.’ The cashier was dumbfounded. My mom continued to ask for a ‘Wedgie Burger’ a bit more and finally pointed at the man and his lovely sandwich….It was explained to her that the man had ordered a ‘VEGGIE burger.’ But of course, we all call them wedgie burgers now. So, this shawl I am naming after my mom. :) She’ll be thrilled. bahaha!

There is also a little bit of a tie in from my son…When he was pretty small he ran up to me and asked me for an Atomic Wedgie. That was when I told him he was not allowed to watch Ed, Edd and Eddy anymore. haha! He was REALLY mad that I wouldn’t’ give him an Atomic Wedgie, so much so, that he even cried. I’m sure he’d be thrilled that I just shared that story with the entire world. BAHAHAHA!

10-28-14: had to stop today because I’m officially out of black. My LYS doesn’t normally stock black because older people can’t see with it??!!! Um…Ok? So it is on order and I’ll have to wait till it comes in. I have two wedges completed and so far I’m really really excited about this little sucker!

Back to the drawing board: 1-5-15
So my LYS had the black finall…after a long shipping strike??!! anyhow, I’m back at it. I’ve revammped the chart and have also decided to go for a stockinette with garter edging and a few defining garter areas….instead of garter all the way.

1-6-15: I did get to knit through the first chart-love it so far. Hope it turns out ok.

1-8-15: After knitting through the first two charts I’ve realized that I needed to tweak it yet again. I want to get this perfect or I’ll never be happy. So although I am groaning about having to start again, at least I am not wincing as I knit because I am not confident I like it. :)

1-9-15: Almost like a dragon almost like a butterfly. HAPPY HaPPY HAPPy!

1-13-15: Been cruising along, I have all the kinks worked out and now it is just a matter of having time to finish knitting it! :)

1-15-15: FINISHED! I cannot describe my elation. I am actually surprised at how well this came together. I had zero idea what on EARTH I was doing going into this, and have had to frog, tweak, redo charts, completely change my formulas in order to get to this point. I am so glad I stuck with it instead of throwing in the towel, as I really considered doing MANY times.
