Notes

This is a lovely pattern: simple but effective and open to a lot of variation. I made it with seven petals instead of nine to conserve yarn.

The yarn was lovely and allowed a lot of frogging and reworking.

This shawl can be made larger or smaller by making more or fewer increase rows (with correspondingly more or fewer decrease rows). If running out of yarn, you can use a decrease row every row, which is what I ended up doing.

Calculating how much yarn you need is tricky. Don’t take the advice I’ve seen to use half your yarn before decreasing! Trust me that won’t end well.

My original calculation was that I needed to start decreasing after I’d used a quarter of the yarn. That would be normal for a circle-based shawl. You have a bit more leeway with this one because of the lacier edging but not as much as you might think. I allowed two thirds of my yarn for the decrease part and that was only enough because I started decreasing every row instead of every other row.

Increasing

odd rows (no increases): ch3, dc in next stitch, *ch2, 1dc in each dc, to next chain stitch* repeat to last 4 stitches, ch2, dc in dc, dc in turning ch.

even rows: ch3, dc in next stitch, *ch2, 1dc in each dc up to centre stitch of block of dcs, 3dc in centre dc, dc to next ch st* repeat to last 4 stitches, ch2, dc in dc, dc in turning ch.

End with an odd row

Set up for decreasing

as row 18 ch3, dc in next dc, *ch2, dc in ch2 space, ch2, dc in each dc up to centre 3 stitches of dc block, dc decrease using first and third of those stitches, dc to next ch st* repeat to last 4 stitches, ch2, dc in dc, dc in turning ch.

as row 19 : one stitch in each of the dc stitches below, one chain for every chain below.

Work these rows once then continue as below

Decreasing

even rows: as the row below except V stitch in every dc that is the centre of the chain section; and decrease using dc decrease across the centre three stitches of each dc block.

odd rows; as the row below except increase in chain section by putting 1dc 2ch in the centre V. No decreases.

Except that I am decreasing at each edge of the dc block instead of in the middle to avoid lumpiness.

I had 23gms left when I finished. I could at most have done three more rows. I was up to row 50 when I finished.

Preblocked size was 19” from neck to end of petal; 21” from neck to end of mesh point.

Blocked size is 21” from neck to end of petal and 27” from neck to end of mesh point.
