Notes

She lives in Arizona, so I thought instead of plain socks, use some of those motifs. She has some kokopellis around the house, so why not on her replacement socks!

The dishcloth pattern is really cute, so I charted the instructions and will center kokopelli on the instep. I also reversed the chart, so they can be dancing toward each other or away from each other. I’ll work the chart upside down, so that they’re right side up on the toe-up socks.

I figured out a long time ago that when I move the wing stitches to the sole needle to work the heel rows, I don’t like the pressure put on the needles, the stitches, or my hands if I move all of them at once. Instead, I move half to a third of them, work those off, and do the other half or another third. Plus, there’s a bit more sense of accomplishment and progress!

For Stella (and, conveniently, for me), I use the following numbers:

  • D = 42
  • E = 3-3/8 3-3/4 inches
  • F = 62
  • G = 21
  • H = 10
  • I = 6
  • for J, the division gives a value of 1.32, so H ÷ 2.4 = 4

For the toe increases, I do “K1, yo, k to last st, rev yo, k1” on both needles, then work one round even. I work both yarnovers throug the trailing leg to twist them shut.

On my Riverbed master pattern page, I have several notes:

  • I do arch expansion rounds with yo…rev yo instead of LLinc…LRinc
  • I do the J increases during last round of arch expansions, then do heel turn on next round.

For the J wing increases, I again did yarnovers instead of LRincs and reverse yarnovers instead of LLincs, which was OK on the LRinc side, as I would have to work those yos to get to the sole stitches to do the heel turn. The other side’s wing stitches, though, won’t get worked until I do the heel, and it would be better for them to be more anchored in the fabric instead of just being a species of yo. So I tinked back and did the LRincs and LLincs (but still just did yo…rev yo for the final inc round).

As I reset the sts to start the heel turn, I realized my last two arch expansion incs ALSO need to be LLinc and LRinc, since they’ll be the first and last heel turn sts. Slipped stitches to get to them, then did the lifted increases with the yarnovers.

Slight setback. I thought our feet were the same size, so I was surprised when I tried it on after turning the heel, and it was about 0.5 inches too short in the foot. So I I double-checked, and we don’t have the same size feet, and her foot is linger now than when I measured before.

Lesson learned! At least socks knit quickly when worked with three strands held together!

OK, so when I had to frog back to lengthen the toe, I decided to do official LLincs and LRincs everywhere, as Riverbed is kind of different from the master patterns with other gusset locations. This one, at least, works better with non-yo incs.
