Notes

The sweater is well-loved and worn often. Very often. I have since re-knit one singed cuff, darned a giant hole in one elbow, and added some preemptive reinforcement on the other.

pattern: 13 stitches / 23 rows on #10
me: 20 St rows = 4 in on #10
me: 24 garter rows = 1 inch on #10

So I had to do some mods.

Body

  • CO using long-tail cast on.
  • 18 garter rows for bottom band (buttonhole on 7th using yo-k2tog on 4th st from edge).
  • 70 St rows for body

Sleeves

  • CO using reverse long-tail cast on.
  • 16 garter rounds.
  • First inc on St row 9 then very 10th row.
  • Knit to 83 St rows.

Yoke

Reduced the yoke to 38 rows.

  • Reserve 8 sts for underams (202 sts).
  • Dec at neck every 7th row (7,14,…,35)
  • Dec at seams every other row 4 times (2,4,6,8), then every 3rd row 10 times (11,14,…,35,38)

Saddle Shoulder Shaping

Obvious errors here. Check the pattern page.

(BO half the sleeve sts after consuming the front sts and work the other half to the center of the back.)

Reduced the shoulder rows by 4. On the first row 1/2 iteration, I ate up an extra st off the front and back by doing a double decrease.

Then worked as directed, except, as noted above, I BO-ed 8 sts after working the front and worked the other 8 across the back.

Button Band, Button Placement

Dude didn’t want the last button too high…

  • 24 rows between buttonholes (using yo-k2tog on 4th st from edge).
  • Started collar incs on row 93 (111th row from hem).
  • Then worked incs every 5th row (98, 103, etc).

Collar

Reduced short rows to a 20-row repeat for my row gauge. And because no one wants a floppy sailor collar.

1: k4, w&t.
3: k8, w&t.
5: k12, w&t.
7: k16, w&t.
9: k20.
11: k16, w&t.
13: k12, w&t.
15: k8, w&t.
17: k4, w&t.
19: k20.

Knit to back center, then graft, because the three needle bind off looks assy.

Pockets

Patch pockets? Bleh. But I didn’t have the energy to plan them out beforehand. And I wasn’t sure where dude would want them.

I picked up 22 sts right above the garter hem and followed these directions, working 20 rows of St st and 11 rows of garter (BO on garter row 12).

Buttons

I went with 1 inch ones. Backed with cheapo shirt buttons.
