A Daily practice scarf documenting the air quality in Salt Lake City in 2020.

This wearable data set was created by knitting one row of stitches each day to record Salt Lake City’s air quality in 2020. Yarn colors correspond to the U.S. EPA’s index for reporting air quality, the Air Quality Index (AQI).

The scarf makes visible the daily routine of Salt Lake inhabitants who monitor the air quality to protect themselves and their loved ones. It is also a data visualization of Salt Lake City’s air quality in the first year of a global pandemic that shutdown the economy and modes of transportation, allowing the planet to breathe a little more easily.
