3/4” strips, #17 needles. Cast on 60 stitches for 22” wide rug. Got about 100 sq. inches of rug per t-shirt. Most were XL or XXL.
February 2013 - Want to knit a second t-shirt rug, larger and denser than my first, our bathmat. This one will go in front of the kitchen sink.
Made a swatch using 3/4” wide t-shirt strips rather than 1/2″. Still using #17 needles.
Cast on 60 stitches. Happily, I got a 22” width on the first try. Yay!
Knit 2 1/2″ of rug (light strip across bottom of swatch) from the single looong spiraling 3/4″ wide strip I cut from a size large t-shirt “body”, armhole to hem. You can read the rest of my t-shirt calculations in this blog post.
DH and I have both tested and approved the feel of the swatch under bare feet.
I’ve got a dozen t-shirts close to the colors in our dining room rug. So far I’ve turned four of them into tarn.
March 2013 - I feel like I’m knitting and knitting and knitting, but making no progress!! When will this rug be done???
April 2013 - Done at Last - LOVE IT!
Two of the t-shirts had side seams so I cut short strips across their width instead of the spiral cut I used on the others. While doing that it occurred to me that I could do the same with the upper shirt and sleeves that I’d tossed aside earlier. Depending on the size of shirt this meant I could get as much as 50% more tarn out of a tee! YAY!
