Knitting toe up, and in sport weight yarn. I flipped the charts upside down and read them that way.
While doing calculations to figure out how many pattern reps I needed, I was coming up with incredibly familiar numbers. Turns out my feet are so similar to my dad’s that, with the different gauge, these have the same number of stitches around, increases in the gusset, and rounds to make the correct foot length as Dad’s Hickory Socks. Oh, heredity, thou art a heartless bitch to give me my dad’s really wide, high-arched, large-heeled feet.
12-19-2012 - Decided to add an extra 12 rows to the body of the foot, since this stitch pattern is very stretch side-to-side, but shrinks lengthwise. Turned the heel and did the heel flap, and it’s fitting weird. Looks like the heel turn was done over too many stitches. Kicking myself for not placing a lifeline after the gusset like I’d thought of doing. Also thinking of ripping back a bit so the gusset doesn’t have so many increases since the heel flap is really tall and the foot is really long.
12-20-2012 - Ripped back to remove last 12-row segment before gusset increases, and will also do a narrower heel turn.
12-21-2012 - Of course my original calculations were correct for the length of the foot. I shouldn’t have added that extra 12 row rep. Heels are turned, heel flaps are done, moving on to the legs finally!
12-24-2012 - Finally done, bound off with Elizabeth Zimmerman’s sewn bind off. The leg is a bit narrow, but I don’t feel it while wearing them, only while putting them on over my massive arches and heels. Love this yarn. It would have worked with 2 skeins if I’d ripped out my swatch and knit with that.
