Because I had leftover yarn after knitting Merlin’s Xmas sweater and thought that a beret would complement the turtleneck well. See also: Cat sadist.

The ultimate recipient was a terrier, not a tabby, so I knit per the pattern and made no adjustments to accommodate for the heavier yarn. The end result fit Merlin-the-dog quite well, but was a bit large on Nathan-the-Reluctant-Cat-Model.
