I love the idea of little flames spreading out into the world, rippling out to touch others in ways we may never know. I think that if everyone would just try to send something good from themselves out daily, the world would be a nicer place.

This is my take on Vincent’s vision of the TARDIS. (You Whovians know what I’m talking about.) It is worked in short rows from one long edge to the other with a feather and fan edging. The body is an asymmetrical triangle, and the rippled edge tends to expand outward after blocking.

This pattern speaks to the programmer and hardware designer in me. So often, small changes in the inputs can have a big impact on outputs, even though the process remains the same. I approach knitting design the same way, and found myself liking all the outputs of this algorithm so much, I wanted to write them all down.

Sometimes inspiration hits unexpectedly, and you just have to be ready for it. After all, a yarn named “King Cake” must be used in a New Orleans themed project, right? And the Crescent City demands a shawl with the same shape.

The Art Lesson Cowl is an experiment in colors using self-striping yarn. Select yarn with boldly contrasting colors to create a piece of abstract art, or more subtle changes for an Impressionist piece. Either way, short rows in the body bend the colors into interesting shapes.

Palo Duro is a crescent shaped shawl worked from the bottom up. It has a garter eyelet edging on the bottom and top edges. The body is worked in stockinette stitch with short rows that curve the edges of the shawl and distort the stripes. The loose gauge results in a drapey, light shawl.

Do I have enough yarn for this shawl? What weight do I need? I don’t know (IDK) but that’s all right! Just grab some yarn that’s begging to be knit, cast on at the center top and don’t stop until you’re ready to, or until you are almost out of yarn. Then bind off, block and enjoy.

These cute snowmen wobble but they don’t fall down. They were inspired by the flat bottom of Sam Snowman, the narrator from “Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer”. They’re also a great way to use up left over bits of sock yarn.
