If you’ve always wished the garter stitch tab part of a project could last forever, this may be just the cowl for you!

Designed to match the worsted-weight Mafic beanie, Aftermafic 1 is a close-fitting neckwarmer-style cowl that can be knit up in just one skein of Malabrigo Rios. (The sample is shown in Frank Ochre, but I think this would look good in a more strongly variegated colorway as well.)

This seamless tube is knit mostly flat. It has faux seams—really, that’s the main part of the design—but there’s no sewing involved.

You’ll need to be able to work decreases, knit flat and in the round, and work simple cables to complete this project. (I did not need a cable needle; your mileage may vary.)

Materials:

  • One skein of Malabrigo Yarn Rios; sample shown in Frank Ochre
  • 24”+ circular needle in US7/4.5mm, or size needed for gauge
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
  • Crochet hook
  • Smooth scrap yarn for provisional cast-on
  • Optional: cable needle

Gauge:
Gauge is 17 sts and 20 rows over 4” in blocked garter stitch, knit flat. This gauge is taken from the first section of the pattern. The vertical section has a slightly looser row gauge at 17 sts and 32 rows over 4” of blocked garter stitch, knit flat.
