Ultimate Knitted Scale Mail Gloves
As a follow up to my simple beginner scale mail gloves pattern, this is my ultimate pattern for scale mail gloves, with options for all sorts of features that I have been asked about over the years, such as;
- Knit in the round
- Option for scales all around the arm
- Ribbed cuff
- Options up to full arm length
- Shaping for longer gloves to fit arm well
This pattern is more advanced due to these upgrades - it is worked in the round, and the scales are added right into the fabric of the gloves with modified purl stitches (with a video tutorial as well as step-by-step photos for the technique).
All my samples are made with small scales from TheRingLord.com (any approx 9/16” by 7/8”leaf shaped scale with 5mm hole should also do)
For each size, scale direction, and coverage combination there is a 3-4 page pattern that covers the full arm length, which if you are only working wrist or elbow length you will work a subsection of. Each then has 2-4 pages of optional colouring charts for planning scale patterns.
With all possible combinations this results in a 91 page PDF. The gloves are worked bottom up or top down depending on which version you choose, both are separately written out.
The materials required vary greatly on the design choices made by the knitter, including:
Small gloves, wrist length, half coverage: 50m yarn, 288 scales
Large gloves, full arm, full coverage: 220m yarn, 3802 scales
This pattern purchase will also grant you access to the companion Pattern Writer speadsheet calculator (versions for Microsoft Excel and Libre Office) with details in the pattern on how to get your spreadsheets.
The pattern writer spreadsheet allows you to input all your own measurements and design choices, and will calculate your very own unique pattern written out row by row!
The gloves can be made in slightly different weights of yarn as long as you match your needles to meet the gauge - a worsted or aran weight can be used to make much lighter weight gloves, while the recommended bulky yarn such as James C Brett Marble Chunky produces a dense and warm base fabric that more firmly holds the scales in place.
The pattern and chart pages are photo-free and can be printed in black and white. In all my patterns I use minimal colour coding, and always include other tells (usually shapes or symbols) so that colour is not vital to the pattern, to make it colour-blind friendly and easy to follow in black and white.
