Rocks, pebbles, stone structures and concrete have fascinated me for years. Whether it’s the strangely shaped rocks in the Burren in Ireland, all the slate in the German Mosel area or the concrete buildings and tiling in my hometown Rotterdam (NL), I just love looking at it.

Combining that fascination with my love for soft and cosy infinity cowls turned into my Concrete Jungle cowl. The colour of the grey hand dyed Hug yarn by Wollfaktor was a perfect match (and sadly, she went out of business….).

I used two sizes of eyelets and two sizes of bobbles to mimic some of the structures of stone: pebbles, holes in lava and concrete. I hope you will enjoy knitting this cowl as much as I did designing it.

Materials needed:

• a crochet hook, about the same size as the knitting needles, for the provisional cast on
• some worsted / aran weight scrap yarn
• a darning needle
• scissors
• optional: another 6mm /US10 knitting needle if you want to do the three needle bind off instead of the kitchener stitch.

About sizing:
I designed this pattern with a long infinity cowl in mind that I could wrap around my neck a few times. But you can play with the length.
1 full pattern repeat = kid’s cowl
2 full pattern repeats = loose adult cowl
3 full pattern repeats = snug cowl wrapped twice
4 full pattern repeats = snug cowl wrapped thrice, or loose cowl wrapped twice.

According to the size you want to knit you’ll need 160 to 450m / 174 to 492 yards of worsted / aran weight yarn. My cowl with 4 full pattern repeats used about 400m / 437 yards of yarn.

Getting gauge is not crucial for this project. I measured my blocked cowl, and had a gauge of 18 stitches x 18 rows on 10cm / 4”.
