About this Pattern:

Inspired by The Three Musketeers, this cowl pattern comes in three different yarn weights: Worsted, Thicker Worsted, and 4-ply. It features fully written instructions in addition to charted instructions. Video tutorials for techniques are linked. A low vision file with 22 point san serif font and enlarged charts is included with purchase.

Sizing:

Worsted Cowl: 1 (2, 3) (4, 5, 6) are a circumference of 19 (20.25, 21.75) (23.25, 24.75, 26.25) inches or 48.5 (51.5, 55.5) (59, 63, 66.5) centimeters. Cowl length is 8.75 inches or 22cm.

Thicker Cowl: 1 (2, 3) (4, 5, 6) are a circumference of 18.5 (19.75, 21) (23.5, 24.5, 25.75) inches or 47 (50, 53.5) (59.5, 62.5, 65.5) centimeters. Cowl length is 7.75 (7.75, 7.75) (8.75, 8.75, 8.75) inches or 19.5 (19.5, 19.5) (22.5, 22.5, 22.5) centimeters.

4-ply Cowl: 1 (2, 3) (4, 5, 6) are a circumference of 19.25 (20.25, 21.25) (23.5, 24.5, 25.5) inches or 49 (51.5, 54) (59.5, 62.5, 65) centimeters. Cowl length is 7.75 (7.75, 7.75) (8.75, 8.75, 8.75) inches or 19.5 (19.5, 19.5) (22.5, 22.5, 22.5) centimeters.

The recommended ease is negative 2” (5cm) for a fitted cowl, and up to 4” (10.2cm) of positive ease for a loose cowl.

The blue cowl is a 4-Ply Cowl in Size 4 worn with 1.5” (3.8cm) of positive ease. The purple cowl is a Worsted Cowl in Size 1 worn with 3” (7.6cm) of negative ease.

Contrast Color: 75 (75, 80) (85, 90, 95) yards or 65 (70, 75) (80, 85, 90) meters.

4-ply sample utilizes Blackthorn (MC) and Russet (CC).

Note: John Arbon recommends washing yarn before use. Carefully undo skein, soak in wool wash, then use a towel to carefully remove water. Hang on a hanger or door knob until dry.

Gauge:

Worsted Cowl: 22 sts and 23 rounds in 4” (10.2cm) of motif.

Thicker Cowl: 26 sts and 28 rounds in 4” (10.2cm) of motif.

4-ply Cowl: 30 sts and 33 rounds in 4” (10.2cm) of motif.

Needles:

Worsted Cowl: Use US 6 (4.0 mm) for Ribbing and US 8 (5.0mm) for motif.

Thicker cowl: Use US 4 (3.5 mm) for Ribbing and US 6 (4.0 mm) for motif.

4-ply Cowl: Use US 2 (2.75 mm) for Ribbing and US 4 (3.5 mm) for motif.

All needles are circular needles. Length should correspond to the cowl circumference. Double pointed needles may also be used.
