When I learned to knit, cables were one of the first mysteries I wanted to explore. How could knitters create those incredible twists and turns of stitches across the fabric of their projects? When I tried them for the first time, I was amazed that they were created merely by rearranging the order of the stitches. I was in awe that something so simple produced such graphic results. I was mesmerized by the way that stacking these shuffled stitches could form twists and braids along any hand-knit design.
Whether you’re new to cable knitting or spellbound by the beauty they add to a project, these socks are perfect for playing with cables. Easy four-stitch left and right crosses are worked every sixth round, with the front of the leg mirroring the back. Textured stitches in between create visual interest but also make it easier to “read” the knitting as the cable twists are worked along the knit row of the patterning. No matter how many cables you’ve knit before, I hope these socks will show how fun it is to Give It a Twist!

Color Suggestions
The best way to let cables shine is to use a solid, semi-solid, or tweed yarn, featuring a color that is not too dark. They can also look great with self-striping or gradient yarns. Lightly speckled yarns may also look nice, but any yarn with too many colors may overwhelm the twists and textures, hiding the lovely stitchwork that has gone into knitting these socks.
