Granny's Square Shorts
Notes:
This is an INTERMEDIATE friendly crochet pattern. This pattern is about using granny squares in garment CONSTRUCTION rather than a pattern on granny squares/Afghan blocks themselves. It does include a very basic granny square pattern in the appendix though. It will cover stitch counts, measurements and alterations to allow size diversity and comfort. You can use whichever granny square you like, and it will cover implications of granny square sizing to fit of the garment. It is written in US terms and the measurements provided are in cm. There are 5 sections to this pattern: Considerations for fibres, Mapping out the design, Maths and joining rows, Finishing touches and Appendix.
Stitches:
Ch= chain
Sc= single crochet
Stsc = stacked single crochet
DC= double crochet
Slst= slip stitch
FPDC = front-post double crochet
BPDC = back-post double crochet
Colourwork:
While this base pattern doesn’t have any colourwork built in, I have used random number generators to get super cute granny square colourways, and would encourage everyone to try it at least once! Feel free to have fun and play around with the pattern. Each round of the granny square can be a different colour!
Yarn: customisable! My example uses an Aran weight and used around 5 balls of 200g (around 1100m).
Hook size: customisable! My example used 5.75mm for my gauge
Gauge: 14st x 6 rws = 10cm x10cm
Flat measurement: customisable! My example used a 5”/12.5cm granny square.
This pattern requires granny squares to be made separately and joined to create the shorts. You can, however, use a join as you go technique if you are confident and like the look of it although I don’t recommend it. Please read the entire pattern and plan out the design prior to making it!
