This blanket has no two squares alike—each is unique, just like snowflakes. This exploration of Nordic mitten motifs in a new setting makes for a fun and interesting knit— you won’t lose interest since each square adds a new motif! To make the pattern more personal, you can alter the square with the children and dog shapes to suit your wishes. Examples could be adding a third child instead of a dog, changing the genders to represent your family, changing the height of the figures (adding to the legs) to make them appear older, or removing that square entirely and replacing with one of your own. You could repeat a snowflake in that square and then call the blanket “only two alike” and see if your family and friends can find the repeated square. There are lots of options for customization, so let your fingers fly!

This blanket is knit in the round and requires you to cut a steek. Detailed instructions for steeking are not provided in this pattern, but there is plenty of information available online.

Some disclaimers: this would not be a good baby blanket without a backing, since tiny fingers and toes can get trapped in the floats. Please put a backing on the blanket if you are going to use for a baby.

This blanket is a lap blanket; it is not large. Check dimensions before you begin, and if you want a larger blanket you could repeat some of the squares or use a larger yarn and needle.

The yarn I’ve called for is not necessarily the best for steeking, since it’s slick and won’t felt. If desired, you could use a 100% wool yarn, not super wash, for optimum results with the steek. However, the yarn I used does work if you take special care to reinforce the steek with needle and thread. I used a hand sewn reinforcement in addition to a crochet reinforcement to keep my steek from unraveling, and it feels secure. It’s theoretically machine washer and dryer safe, but I would absolutely recommend a garment bag to keep floats from snagging.

If you use the Luxe Merino, you will need two balls of each color.
