Shift Beanie is a versatile machine-knitted hat with a folded brim and two ways to wear it. Wear it with a relaxed crown, or turn up the brim for a closer fit.

Choose a single-colour version or use plating to create a subtle two-colour effect, with contrasting shades showing on the brim and main section.

The beanie is knitted flat in one piece from the bottom up, with a shaped crown and a mattress-stitch seam at the back. The pattern includes two methods for forming the folded hem: using the main bed only or with a ribber attachment.

Equipment: a standard gauge knitting machine. A ribber attachment is optional. The plated version requires a machine that supports plating.

Yarn: Z. Hinchliffe & Sons 2/17nm Lambswool (100% lambswool; 850 m/100 g), with 2 strands used together. Use two strands of the same colour for the single-colour version, or one strand of each colour for plating.

Total yarn required: 80 (90, 100) g for Child (Women, Men).

Gauge: 31 stitches × 45 rows = 10 × 10 cm in stocking stitch, measured after washing and steaming, with the fabric relaxed.

Finished measurements:
Width measured flat: 23 (24, 25) cm.
Full height: 27.5 (28, 28.5) cm.
Height with the brim turned up: 19.5 (20, 20.5) cm.

The width and height can be adjusted.

The pattern includes video tutorials for key knitting steps, along with guidance on recalculating stitch and row counts for your own gauge and preferred measurements.
