The cabled brim of this hat is a more sophisticated alternative to traditional ribbing for a hat. The unique cabled brim is snug without being tight. It’s knit horizontally using short rows based on an 8-stitch cable and as you knit it forms a preliminary cast on for the body of the hat. Those stitches are stored on the needle and left unworked until the cable is complete and you’re ready to begin the body of the hat. The pattern will fit an average adult size about 22” head circumference. You do need to do a small gauge in the pattern stitch you will use for the body. Once the cable is the right length, the pattern gives the math for you to figure out the number of stitches that need to be added based on your gauge so it will fit really well. The button is as decorative way to connect the ends of the cable when the hat is complete with that little something extra to turn an ordinary button into a unique detail. The Blue version uses the variation of the seed stitch listed in the pattern. The Garnet color uses a k2, p2 for 2 rows and then p2, k2 for 2 rows. You will need two markers one a regular and the other a pin style plus a cable needle. I generally work the cabled brim on a 24” or longer circular size 10 needle, then switch to a 16” #10 circular for the body until I’m ready to do crown decreases. I switch back to the longer needle and work the crown decreases using magic loop but you can use dpns for the body and the decreases if you prefer. You will need the longer needle for the cable.
