Hilary Smith Callis

Knitter, designer, mama, farmer’s wife, and recent re-resident of my home town in California’s agricultural Central Valley.

I grew up in a family that has been farming melons (and such) for about a century in the area, but left for the big city (LA) when it was time for college. After getting degrees in Greek & Latin and Art History, I somehow ended up landing a job at NASA and made my home in California’s other big city, San Francisco, for 10 years. But life in the city proved difficult with a young one, so we all packed up and moved back to my home town, where my husband farms, my son digs in the backyard all day, and I try to take care of them both and listen to the quiet of the non-city life.

You can find my work in such publications as Knitty, Twist Collective, Knitscene Magazine, and “Brave New Knits: 26 Projects and Personalities from the Knitting Blogosphere.” I enjoy designing feminine, wearable pieces and love bright colors and neutrals alike.

You can read more about my design process in an interview I did with Robin Hunter, here.

Please contact me if you have any pattern questions/concerns -- I’d love to hear from you!

And please come hang out in The Yarniad’s Symposium, my Ravelry group, where we share photos and discuss any pattern difficulties. We’d love to have you!
