Family Roots was originally founded in April of 2005 under the name Ky Baby Knits. My love of knitting for my family is what inspired me to knit for other people as a way to bring income in to our household and stay home with my children while they were babies and toddlers. What a gift this was! I love to knit and while doing so I could extend my time as a stay at home mom and provide other moms with knitted longies and soakers for their little ones.

In April of 2005 the number of Independent Artisan yarn dyers was extremely small. I had two sources that I used, but mostly I dyed my own yarn in my kitchen 1 or 2 skeins at a time in colors chosen by my customers. A natural progression in the knitting and yarn scene saw the emergence of many new knitters and yarn dyers. It is, and has been, a real joy to watch and be a part of.

During most of 2006 I was a full time mom to my then 7 year old son, 1.5 year-old daughter and newborn twin daughters. It was plenty to keep me busy! When I began spending more time operating Ky Baby Knits again in late 2006 I began selling a few skeins of yarn a week along with my knits and was surprised at how many new knitters were competing for the same few skeins in my store and a handful of other Indie dyer’s stores. I was still primarily a knitter through most of 2007 and 2008 although I was slowly spending more and more time dyeing yarn.

The switch to the name Family Roots in September of 2009 came after a transformation in my Fiber Arts venture. I now primarily operate as an Artisan Yarn Dyer and with that I felt it was time for a new name. The name Family Roots embodies my love of knitting for my family. I am committed to providing beautiful, unique, high quality yarns to my customers. This is my way of enjoying my dream job and also being a part of YOUR love of knitting for family and friends. It is a joy and an honor and I thank you for being a customer of Family Roots.
