Spreading some knitty joy during this difficult festive season -- all Katie Flora Knits patterns are on sale for $2 for one week, until midnight Friday 11th December. Stay well, and keep knitting. <3

Graceful and airy, Alpenshawl is as comfortable caressing your shoulders on a crisp summer walk as she is wrapped like a scarf when sunlight fades. Follow undulating lace curves on the right side only, then shape Alpenshawl’s generous, feminine crescent with stress-free short rows. Indulge in some natural luxury, wherever your alpine path leads.

Pattern includes both written and charted directions.

Difficulty Level

Adventurous Beginner – Intermediate.

Techniques Used

  • Knit & purl
  • Increasing stitch (YO) and decreasing stitches (k2tog; k3tog; SSK; s2-k1-psso)
  • Right side-only lace (both written and charted directions included)
  • Wrapless short rows

Yarn

549yds/502m of The Fibre Company Meadow (40% merino, 25% llama, 20% silk, 15% linen; 549yds/502m per 100g skein). Substitute heavy lace to light fingering-weight yarn blending wool and at least 30% silk, bamboo, linen or similar). Yardage includes 10% extra for small variances in gauge/technique. NB: if substituting yarn, required yardage will vary.

Gauge

Although gauge is not crucial in ensuring a good outcome with Alpenshawl, the sample was knit to approximately 18st and 36 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch after blocking, on 4.5mm/US 7 needles. Always swatch to check if you like the fabric your gauge produces!

Needles

4.5mm/US 3 and 5mm/US4 100cm/40” circular needles (for carrying large amount of stitches)
OR size appropriate to reach preferred gauge.

Notions

  • Tapestry needle
  • Large, pinnable surface for blocking
  • Optional: 30 stitch markers for defining lace repeats

Finished Measurements

Wingspan (firmly blocked): 178cm/70”
Depth at tip: 28cm/11”
