Cosecha de Trigo (Spanish for “wheat harvest”) is a convertible scarf-cowl meant to be cozy and rustic. The cabled lace border is worked alongside a a garter stitch body. A button at one end allows you to secure Cosecha de Trigo in place as a scarf or even wear it as a cowl. Best of all, it calls for just one skein of worsted weight yarn! Pattern can be worked from charts or written instructions.

This is a companion piece to Cielo de Cosecha, a pattern written for a bulky weight scarf with a similar construction. Cielo uses a faux cable lace border and is more beginner friendly.

Yardage note: Original listing for this said ~190 yards of worsted weight yarn was needed. My prototype used 180 yards of a 200 yard skein. Testers used 200-225 yards. I have updated the listing to include this range. If you find yourself running short, work one less repeat of the Center Section- the length should still be close!

Additional Materials:

  • 2.5 cm/0.5 in button
  • 4.5 mm/US 7 crochet hook (if using crochet cast on)
  • cable needle
  • yarn needle
  • stitch marker

Techniques & Stitches: Knit, purl, yarn over, k2tog, m1L, and cable crosses involving yarn overs and k2tog.

Notes:

  • The crochet cast on creates an edge that matches the slipped stitch edge of the scarf. The knitted cast on will also work, though it will not match exactly.

  • Pattern can be worked fully from either charted or written instructions.

  • For a wider scarf or a shawl, continue working body increases until scarf is desired width. The Increase section will be the same length as the Decrease section.

  • If changing shawl width or yarn weight, keep gauge, sizing, and yardage changes in mind.
