I saw the flying geese stitch pattern in Vogue Knitting – The Ultimate Knitting Book and was immediately attracted to it. Flying geese is also a quilt block, and I was a quilter first. In knitting, it is a simple K5, P5 pattern.

The hat will fit the average woman’s head. For a snug-fitting hat, knit the Flying Geese Stitch Pattern 3 times. For a slouchier hat or a larger head, knit the pattern 4 times. Be sure to end with round 10 of the stitch pattern, which is continued into the crown decrease section of the hat. If the hat still needs to be larger, use slightly larger needles.

The dark purple hat was knit with Cascade Yarns Lana D’Oro (50% Superfine Alpaca and 50% Wool) in color 1070. This hat has 4 repetitions of the stitch pattern.

The light purple hat was knit with Kraemer Perfection (30% Domestic Merino and 70% Acrylic) in color Y1523. This hat has 3 repetitions of the stitch pattern.

The pink hat was knit with Dream Classy (100% Australian Merino Wool) in color 110. This hat has 4 repetitions of the stitch pattern. This has also has an experimental round of purl stitch prior to the start of the stitch pattern. The purl round was not incorporated into the finished pattern.
