I’ve always thought that the pattern made by a jet trail across a blue sky was intriguing. The patterning on this cowl is meant to represent that visual image.

Alternating rows of lace patterning and slip stitches combine to create an interesting stitch pattern that is strong enough to show off that one special skein of variegated yarn. This cowl is knit in the round in one piece.

Medium: 34 in (43 cm) long by 16 in (40 cm) width
Long: 44 in (56 cm) long by 12 in (30 cm) width

You will need 385 yards (352 m) of a fingering or sock weight yarn for either the medium or long version of this cowl. The yarn shown is 100% wool which allows the cowl to be blocked and show the lace patterning. The original yarn gauge was 28 st to 4 in/10 cm on size 2 US/2.75 mm needles.

This pattern contains both written and charted instructions as well as a blocking schematic. The lace pattern is a 6 stitch x 24 row repeat. The pattern switches direction every 12 rows.

You will need a marker for the beginning of the round, and it is recommended to place a few more markers for the repeats. You will also need circular needles long enough for 156 (198) stitches. Gauge is not critical for this pattern as it is an accessory, However, if you knit tightly you might want to use a size 7 US (4.5 mm) circular needle instead of the size 6 US (4.0 mm) needle that is specified in the pattern in order for the cowl to drape as shown.
