I’ve always been intrigued by pictures of sound waves where they are shown as repeating lines with a spreading effect. This wrap is my attempt to recreate that effect in a wearable design.

This pattern is fully reversible and contains both written and charted instructions as well as a blocking schematic. However, even if you love charts, it might be easier to follow the written instructions on this pattern as the inner edge is a 1 row pattern, and the main body is also a 1 row pattern.

Both lace patterns are easy and repetitive but they do occur every row.

Shawlette:

  • 9.5 in (24 cm) depth by 41 in (104 cm) wingspan
  • 420 yd (384 m) fingering/4 ply weight
  • Yarn: Valley Yarns Charlemont, original gauge 28 st to 4 in/10 cm

Shawl:

  • 9.5 in (24 cm) depth by 65 in (165 cm) wingspan
  • 650 yd (595 m) sport/5 ply weight
  • Yarn: Kauni Effektgarn, original gauge 28 st to 4 in/10 cm Kauni Note: Kauni is a yarn with amazing colorways but a fairly rough hand in the skein. This yarn was soaked with water and a 1/4 cup of vinegar to help smooth the yarn.

Pattern Gauge:
20 st/20 rows = 4 in/10 cm on 6 US/4.0 mm needles

Gauge is not critical in this pattern, as it is an accessory. As worn, it is longer than 65 in (165 cm) as the front edges drape and create long ruffles.

You will need two needle sizes, a size 5 (3.75 mm) needle was used on the inner border and a size 7 (4.5 mm) needle was used for the main body. If you want to change the size of the shawl, there are modification notes in the pattern.

Notes: In most patterns, ssk and sl1, k1, psso are fairly equivalent forms of a left leaning decrease. In this pattern, sl1, k1, psso is an important design element. Before deciding to do ssk, it is strongly recommended that you make a small swatch to make sure the final effect is satisfactory.

Technical Notes: This pattern is 4 pages long, and under 500 KB in size.
