The width is given with a total of 77 stitches in the round, due to the fact that stranded socks need extra stitches. This way you are able to use your normal needle size. I usually knit plain stockinette socks with 60-64 stitches in the round, but need 76-80 stitches for stranded socks.

Pattern requires knitting in the round, stranded knitting, weaving in strands, increases, decreases - for advanced knitters.
