In the summer of 2003, I met a family from Turkey and expressed my interest in their culture, particularly sock knitting. They generously offered to look for socks on my behalf, when they returned to Turkey on a visit.

I thus became the proud owner of four pair of authentic Turkish socks. This design is inspired by the structure of one pair I received, using its toe and heel but adding colorwork throughout.

Construction: In the round on 5 double-pointed needles (4 holding, 1 working). Toe up starting with wrapped cast on, and striped band heel with flap but no gusset. Top finished with eyelets and (optional) Bosnian Slip-Stitch Crochet edge. Braided tassel, also optional.

Yarn

  • 1 / 1 / 2 / 2 / 2 skeins Amethyst (MC)
  • 1 skein Turquoise (CC1)
  • 1 skein Cherry (CC2)

Finished Dimensions

  • Heel to toe: 7.75 / 8.75 / 9.33 / 9.75 / 10.66”
  • Floor to cuff top: 9.75 / 10 / 10.25 / 10.5 / 10.75”
  • Foot circ: 7 / 7.5 / 8 / 8.5 / 9”
