I have knit this blanket for a good few years, it has been gifted and sold at our store too.
Hanging on a high wooden bannister it looked the perfect loft accessory. That was before I wrote the pattern up! We knit so much aran visually and from memory.

Materials
1000 yards of aran or worsted weight in a merino base,
1200 yards of aran in a traditional aran base.
The sky blue here is merino and weights 470 grms.
(allow 10% extra if purchasing a new dye batch)
Also I am happy to supply yarn and ship anywhere.

NeedlesI worked this on 5mm 35cm long straight needles. You may choose to work straight on circular needles.

There is no sewing so you only need to darn any loose ends or joins.
*Size** 23 x 52 in (59 x 122 cm) in merino, 25 x 52 ins (63 x 132) in heavier aran or worsted.**

Pattern writing my designs I hope will become a sustainable part of my knitwear studio business.

“What can I say ….absolutely stunning! A fantastic design by Edel MacBride’ found on her Knitfield Ravelry Store. Appropriately named Ulster Blanket. Sure to become a family heirloom.“ Louise Williamson, Light House Yarns. (Thanks Louise)

The inspiration for this blanket is on the pattern. It references my time working under the Mountains of Mourne with the wonderful Mrs Sekules in her knitting empire set up in 1950. The most unlikely of tales that hundreds of knitters would be kept knitting traditional Aran for the top stores of the world by a lady who had survived so much in two POW’s with young children.(Edith Sekules, surviving the nazis, exile and Siberia, published by Vallentine Mitchell)

Rating The pattern is easy for those who knit Aran and is very achievable for an Aran novice too. On 1-10, I rate it 5 in difficulty.

It is an ambition achieved to develop and share this beautiful heirloom with other knitters. I’d like to thank the Class of Milwaukee 2020 that inspired me.

(The SKY BLUE image is readable, note on panel two I have knit the 13 st diamond rather than the 15 stitch one visible in the image, this was to keep a consistent stitch count between panels)

A shout out to Arizona, a State I have spend some happy happy days in and plan to return. Julie Steinhafel stayed indoors from the beautiful sunshine to test knit through and tech edit my notes
