Notes

The requests keep rolling in! I am so inspired by my fellow citizens and beloved friends as they stand up and fight to make this world a better place. I’m proud to be a small part of the resistance. I may not be able to march, but I can knit (and write letters, and make phone calls), so I just keep knitting these hats (and writing and calling). Every hat is made with fierce love to keep the wearer safe and strong.

My first batch of hats, the ones that went to that first amazing march, are on their own project page, Pussies Grab Back.

My second batch of hats--the first dozen requests that came in after the Women’s March--have another project page, Pussyhats Part 2: From Moment to Movement.

The littlest hats have their own project page, Kittenhats.

The fourth and final batch of pussyhats can be found in Pussyhat Nation: Pink Cat Hats Part IV.

all stitches are cast on using German Twisted CO unless otherwise noted.

Hat 21: Sue

WM Pure: Schwarz, PP5 light, Fuchsia; WM Twin: Tutu Med.

CO 76 US 5 needles, work 2-color brioche for 3 1/4 inches.

Change to stockinette, inc to 112 sts.
Change to US6 needles, work in Walker’s Rib & Welt Diagonal until 8.25 inches.
Knit one row, increasing 12 stitches concentrated at ends.
Knit one row even.
BO on WS using 3-needle BO. (Probably would have been better to do BO on RS--the two rows of stockinette seem to want to curl, which draws the seam down inside the hat.

This hat is fully reversible.

Note: This textured stitch pattern does not draw the fabric in very much, if at all. I did not need to increase by nearly this many stitches after the ribbing.

Hat 22: Laura LaSala

WM Pure Rotkappchen, Fuchsia, PP5 Light; WM Twin Tutu medium

US5 needles CO 85 sts; work flat in Three-Color Daisy Stitch until 3-4 inches.

This is a stiff, inelastic stitch that draws the fabric in quite a bit. I created a 13-stitch ribbed “extender” that I knitted in when I joined to knit in the round.

Should have cast on about 100 sts for a woman’s hat and more for a man’s. I actually prefer the idea of integrating a ribbed section, approx 3” wide, in the back, to make the band more adaptable to different sizes and to stay on more comfortably.

If I were to use this stitch again (which is debatable--it’s a lot of p3tog, and since the fabric is pretty stiff, it gets painful) I will:
a) make 4-row stripes of each color instead of 2-row stripes and
b) work in the ribbed extender as an integral part of the band and stripe sequence.

Increased to 108 sts (already had 98 after adding the extender), then changed to US6 needles.

Worked Walker’s Four-Color Blister Stitch (Book 2, p.110) until piece measured nearly 9”. Bound off on WS with three-needle BO.

Blister Stitch is a fun and decorative stitch that would look even better at a firmer gauge. It’s quick and easy to knit.

Hat 23 for Wesley

WM Pure, Dornröschen and Clementine; WM Twin, Tutu medium.

CO 100 sts US6 needles (first time I’ve used 6 for rib). Work Walker’s Ripple Rib for 1 1/2 chart repeats (a little more than 3”). This makes a an attractive and stretchy fabric that does not squeeze as tightly as regular ribbing. It would have been just as effective with 8 or even 12 fewer sts.

Inc to 126 sts and work Wildcat Stripes (Walker 3, p.234) for two full chart repeats. Work one row plain knit and BO with 3-needle BO on WS.

Even though the body had 26 more stitches, the stitch pattern drew it in so much that it was actually a bit smaller than the ribbing.

Hat 24 Danny’s crew

WM Pure: Kneif Mich, Clementine. WM Twin: Tutu medium

CO 104 sts with US4 and worked Ripple Rib for 3 inches. Changed color when zigzag changed direction, but I was off by a row every time. Now maybe I understand it, lol. Notes on chart.

I think Ripple Rib needs to be worked even more tightly to really look good, or at least in a very light color.

Inc to 120 sts, change to US6. Work reversed Rib & Welt Diagonal until 8.5 inches. BO with 3-needle BO on WS.

The Rib & Welt draws in more than the Ripple Rib, so even though it’s worked over 16 more stitches, the widths of the two sections are the same.
This is my favorite hat so far for fit. I love the loose Ripple Rib and how the body of the hat is the same size, and both of them are ideal for a slouchy fit on my head. I won’t be keeping this one but I may knit a copy. The colors work surprisingly well, too.

Kneif Mich 161g

Hat 25 for Danny!

WM Twin: Tutu medium; WM Pure: Tutu medium (ran out of Twin), Dornröschen, Fuschsia, and Rotkappchen.

CO 120 with US4. Work Zebra Chevron for 2 repeats (24 rows total). Switch to US6 needles, continue working in pattern until nearly 9 inches. BO on WS with three-needle BO.

This Zebra Chevron makes a wonderfully thick-but-airy, elastic fabric. It’s bouncy-squishy. LOVE this fabric!

Note: Relaxes when blocked. This one measures 9” in length after binding off and blocking. 8” would be sufficient for a woman’s hat.

Note 2: Knit one or two rows in MC after cast on. This way when the edge rolls, CC doesn’t show. A much tidier effect.

Hat 26 I think this one is for me!

MC: WM Pure, Tutu medium. Contrats: WM Pure, Fuchsia, Clementine, PP5 light; Verdant Gryphon Eidos ELC magenta

with US4 needles, CO 104 work 3 rows MC. Join to work in round and begin Blister stitch. Decided a few rounds in that it was too big; decreased eight stitches by slipping four off LH needle onto dpn and knitting each of those 4 together with each of the next 4 on LH needle, on two successive rounds. Did this at beginning of round, then rearranged stitches to place this “tuck” at center back. It’s nearly invisible! So essentially this hat is worked on 96 stitches.

Note: CO 96 sts for a woman’s hat, 100 for a man’s. 9 repeats of blister stitch pattern for a woman’s hat, 10 or 11 for a man’s.

Continued to work Blister Stitch over 96 stitches on US4 needles until piece measured 9”. Bound off on WS using 3-needle BO.

No band, just the rolled edge and blister stitch all the way up. I love this dotty hat!

Could go down a needle size, possibly even two.

Hat 27 for Chris McCamic

Another Zebra Chevron hat, this time with WM Pure in Tutu medium and Baba Jaga WD.

CO 120 sts as before, but used US6 instead of US4 needles. Worked 4 rows in MC (Tutu) so when the brim rolls, it won’t show the back of the mosaic pattern. Joined CC (Baba Jaga WD) and worked one or two rows in Zebra Chevron. Decided the band seemed way too loose, even for a man’s hat (it had positive ease on my head!) and switched to US4 needles. Worked until piece measured about 3 inches, then switched to US6 needles and continues in pattern until 9” long.

Probably did not need to go as small as US4 for the “band”. US5 would have been sufficient. The best plan would probably have been to work the stockinette edge on US4, go up to US 5 for two repeats of Zebra Chevron chart, and then switch to US6. I’ll try that next time--if there is a next time. I’ve knitted this twice already.

Hat 28 for Nikki

Wollmeise Pure: Törtchen and Tutu medium.

Using US 4 needles and Tutu medium, CO 93 sts with German twisted CO. Work in stockinette st for 5 rounds.

Switch to US6 needles and Törtchen, work in Dragon Scale pattern until piece measures approx 7 inches.

Switch to US4 needles and Tutu medium. Work in stockinette until piece measure about 8 1/4 inches. BO on WS with 3-needle BO.

The Dragon Scale stitch pattern draws the fabric in a bit (which is why I need to go down two needle sizes to work stockinette over the same number of stitches). It’s also quite elastic. Could be used as a substitute for light ribbing. At this gauge and over this number of stitches, it fits my head closely

Don’t love the rolled edge with this stitch pattern. I think the rolled edge should be reserved for a beefy all-over mosaic pattern like Zebra Chevron.

Hat 29 Nancy Ciolek

WM Pure, Tutu light and Tortchen

US4 needles, CO 94, work 6 rnds MC.

switch to US 7 and CC, work in slip stitch pattern until about 7 inches. (Could have gone up to US8 here without being too loose.)

Switch back to US 4 needles and Tutu light and work stockinette for about 1 1/2 inches. Bind off on WS with 3-needle BO.

This slip stitch pattern makes a thick, springy fabric that could almost be used like ribbing. At this gauge over this number of stitches, it fits my head closely. It’s slightly tighter than the Dragon Scale in Hat 28.

I don’t love the rolled edge on either Hat 28 or Hat 29. I think the rolled edge should be reserved for a beefy all-over mosaic pattern like Zebra Chevron. I wish I had done an inch of ribbing instead.

Hat 30 Karen Ehler

MC: WM Pure, Tutu light. CC1: VG Eidos, ELC magenta. CC2: WM Pure, Tortchen.

with US4 and CC1 , CO 114 sts, work k2, p1 ribbing for 2 rounds.

Switch to US7, join CC2 and work corrugated rib: k2 CC2, p1 CC1 until piece measures about 2”. (I alternated between CC2 and MC every 4 rows).

Inc 3 sts in pattern at each end (insert a complete k2, p1 after an existing p1) for a total of 120 sts. Continue working in pattern as established until piece measures about 4”.

Transition: work corrugated rib with MC and CC1 for 4 rows.

Switch to US5 and continue in K2, p1 rib in MC until piece measures approx 8 1/4”. BO on WS with three-needle bind off. Take care to line it up so that knit is bound to knit and purl to purl. It requires a decrease at each end.

Love this hat! If making for myself, would cast on 6 or 9 more sts for a loose fit. But I have a pretty big head, and I don’t like fitted hats.

Hat 31 for Kate Rodenhouse

With US7, CO 114 sts.
Work in 2-color corrugated rib for 3 inches, varying as desired.

Switch to US 4. Work in k2, p1 rib until piece measures 8 1/4 inches. BO using 3-needle BO, careful to align knits with purls (requires a dec at each end).

Hat 32

Color A: WM Pure PP5 dark. Color B: WM Pure Fuchsia. Color C: WM Pure: Tutu medium. Color D: WM Pure Tutu light.

With US7 and Color 1, CO 112 sts. Work in 1x1 corrugated rib for about an inch (K1 Color A, p1 Color B).

Change to US4. Knit one round Color A.
Knit one round Color B, decreasing 8 sts evenly spaced. (104 sts)
With Color B and US4, work Walker’s Rib & Welt Diagonal until piece measures approx 9 inches from CO. Change colors as desired to create gradient/colorblock effect. Color change is most effective on a K5 (as opposed to a p5) round.
Knit one round. BO on WS using 3-needle BO.

Hat 33 Amy Ann’s daughter

Tutu light, Tutu medium, Dornroschen, a tiny bit of Tortchen.

gauge: 23 sts/24 rows = 4 inches in pattern stitch (Round 1: sl2, k2; Round 2: k2, sl2)

with US7, CO 108 sts. Work in vertical 2-color slip stitch stripes until piece measures 8 1/4 “. BO on WS with 3-needle bind off.

--Pre-blocking, this hat seemed too small. It is tight and a bit short. I am hoping blocking will make a big difference!
--Post-blocking--it’s still a bit on the small side, but wearable.

Did not intend for the edge to roll. I thought it would lie flat like ribbing. It seems that the k2, slip2 pattern draws the fabric in so much that the CO can’t help but roll. I’m lucky it didn’t ruffle! Next time I would CO, work in ribbing for an inch or so, then increase 4-8 stitches, and then start the k2 slip 2 pattern. It’s a striking pattern and makes a gorgeously thick, soft, squishable fabric…but it’s a pain to knit!

eta: I just had a request for a hat for a nine-year-old child, and I think this one will be perfect! So glad I hadn’t sent it out yet!

Hat 34 & 35 Sawyer & Rhys

baby hats based on Woolly Wormhead’s Pinion pattern, with a number of mods. The baby/toddler hats have their own Kittenhat project page. Yarn totals are included on this page because I forget to keep track after every hat.

Pictures for 34 & 35 at the very bottom of the picture column here. The rest are pictured only on the Kittenhat project page.

Hat 36 Danny’s friend Kylie

With US4 and Tortchen, CO 108 sts, work k2, p1 rib for 2”.
Change to Dornroschen and knit one row, increasing 4 stitches evenly (to get correct number of sts for basketweave pattern. Work improvised basketweave pattern until piece measure 6 1/2”.
Knit one row and decrease to correct stitch count for k2, p1 rib. Work in k2, p1 rib until piece measures 8 1/2”.
Knit one row.
BO on WS using 3-needle BO.

A slouchy and cute hat! 108 sts in k2, p1 rib is rather loose on my 21 3/4” head. The improvised basketweave pattern isn’t ribbed enough to draw the fabric in, so it’s loose fitting, but the rib at the top tightens it up and makes the ears stand up nicely.

Hat 37 Danny’s other friend

With US4 and Tortchen, CO 108 sts, work k2, p1 rib for 2”.
Change to Roter Himbeermund and knit one row. Work improvised knit/purl pattern until piece measure 6 1/2”.
Knit one row.
Change to Tutu medium. Work in k2, p1 rib until piece measures 8 1/2”.
Knit one row.
BO on WS using 3-needle BO.

A slouchy and cute hat! 108 sts in k2, p1 rib is rather loose on my 21 3/4” head. The knit/purl pattern isn’t ribbed enough to draw the fabric in, so it’s loose fitting, but the rib at the top tightens it up and makes the ears stand up nicely. I like the bumpiness of this one more than the smooth basketweave in the previous one.

Hat 38 Heather Beechner

With US4 and Tortchen, CO 108 sts, work k2, p1 rib for 2”.
Change to Roter Himbeermund and knit one row. Work Walker’s Double Basket Pattern (Book I, p.18) until piece measure 7 1/2”.
Change to Tutu medium. Work in k2, p1 rib until piece measures 8 1/2”.
Knit one row.
BO on WS using 3-needle BO.

Thought this one would be slouchy like the two previous, but the double basketweave acts more like ribbing and draws the fabric in as far as the k2, p1 rib (although it doesn’t hold it as tightly). It’s a beautiful squishy woven rib that almost looks cabled. Therefore, this hat is more fitted and less slouchy. Would love to see the Double Basketweave at a tighter gauge.
