Notes

Really not sure about this so far - the ends (between the 2 circular needles) are laddering and despite my best efforts to keep the tension the same (normally not a problem at all) it’s looking quite messy. It doesn’t look anything like the other projects so I’m wondering if Drops Lace is thinner than the Wollemeise most people seem to have used for the project, or if I’ve suddenly lost the ability to knit!

After research, emails with Martina Behm and a general consensus on the blog, I’m sticking with it. I’ve changed to a single circular needle so there is no more laddering, and I’m assured that the stitches will even out a lot more after washing/blocking. It’s currently 9”/23cm wide and I can see that it is looking much nicer already.

The pattern is great. Very simple to remember and I love the way that it produces a huge stocking stitch shawl with no purling.

July 9th:

Yay - 50% done! Daren’t count the stitches but there are already A LOT! I’ve been working on other little projects including hexipuffs for the Beekeeper’s Quilt to prevent boredom and inject colour into my craft time, but this is still growing surprisingly well.

*** Jan 2013 update ***
Oh dear - in July I kept this project to knit on holiday but it was SOOOO hot, I couldn’t work on it. And by the time we got back it was the summer holidays… blah blah blah… I lost my motivation on it.

I added a few rounds in October but it got SO big that the rounds took forever and it ended up back in the bottom of a bag.

For the start of 2013 I decided to finish it. I’ve added a few rounds and am now onto the edging. It won’t be as big as originally planned, but it’s already massive, and at least it will be finished!!!!

Jan 11th - BOUND IT OFF!!!!! It’s absolutely enormous and lovely and snuggly and soft and scrumptious. I am already wondering about making another in thicker yarn as the Drops lace is really light. It weighs 66g - I used only 2/3 of the second ball.

There are some ‘issues’ to cover (sew in) from the early problems including some ends from cutting a yarn tangle out of the first ball and some ‘snags’ which are from tightening up those pesky ladders.

If I were to make this pattern again (likely) I’d

  • use thicker yarn

  • start on one circular needle to avoid ladders

  • use a more interesting coloured yarn, even semi-solid may have broken up the monotony a bit.
