needles: Rowan suggests 4 mm needles, and since my favorite 4mm-bamboo ones were already in use, I decided to finally try out the Nova Cubics, that I had bought in this Knit-Pro Comby IC Sampler Set-II. just by feeling them out I had deemed them quite pointy for my taste (as the KP Symphony needles that I can hardly use) but it turns out they aren’t at all that bad to knit with, and might be just perfect for this project! on the one hand because this yarn is quite splitty! on the other, because I tend to knit loose, and I’ve seen comments about these needles not only being good for your wrists, but also making your knitting tighter.
when I had finished the startup round and the first report, I wasn’t that happy with the edges. I had also just happened to hear PrairiePiper mention not being too enthusiastic about hers, on episode 71 of the Knitting-Pipeline podcast. so, I started to sniff around on google and among other finished projects for modifictions:
1: I decided to take out what I had done out, add one stitch to the cast on, and purl the first and last stitch of every row, as described here.
btw. this yarn is not easily frogged, so besides my two skeins being from my LYS’s scrap basket and the yarn discontinued, I don’t think I’d buy it again …
3: as Knitree: after binding off each point, I am knitting into the back loop of the next stitch, in order to tighten it up (by giving it a little twist) and again, avoiding loose stitches on the edge.
2: from the third 8th row on, I’ve done samanjanpgh’s lacey row.
- this is hard to put down! “just one more point …” 8)
I decided to skip the pointed bind-off modification that others have suggested, partly because I was offline on a train when I got to the last row, but I also thought it looked good this way.
I ended up with 2g left and 29 points, which I feel is perfect for a shawlette size. I’d say the yarn is a bit itchy and I’ll probably only wear it with a high collar, so this size is also enough to add both extra warmth and style.
actually, I thought this looked good right off the needles but decided to do a spray block and put my new blocking gear to the test 8)
