This scarf is a gift for my department head from when I taught in England. She wanted a scarf; I wanted to try something a little different from what I’ve made so far. A shawl it was! I discovered this lovely “trilogy of four” patterns, and Trillian seemed like a good balance between something challenging yet still achievable without turning out terrible. It helps that Trillian is also a mathematician—apt for a gift for a math teacher.

My lacework isn’t quite as good as the example photos, alas. And the damn thing took forever to finish, adding one stitch per row and then knitting across all those tiny stitches. Serves me right for picking a pattern done in sock yarn. But I am pleased with the result—and hopefully Lesley will be too.
