This year I was determined to come up with a Christmas gift for my husband that he would really love and want to wear – enter my ‘Phantom Skull’ (AKA ‘Punisher’) scarf. He loves the ‘Punisher’ and uses the likeness on much of his work equipment. I created this pattern as a subtle nod and homage to that character.

Introducing my STARFLOWER SUPER SCARF pattern!!

I finally finished this pattern! It feels like it has been in the thinking/tinkering stages FOREVER.

The look of the herringbone stitch is so timeless and traditional, as well as suitable for men AND women! I wanted to make a cowl with a stitch that was reminiscent of a tweedy, beautiful Herringbone fabric, but not super complicated to make. I found a few patterns online, but they were all too difficult (even with years of knitting experience ...

Made from the same super bulky yarn that I use for most of my ‘Katniss’ (Catching Fire) inspired cowls, these mittens are a great coordinating item. You can either use the same color yarn, or even mix it up (as shown in the first photo) for a great look.

This vest showcases the same style herringbone stitch that I used for my original version of the Katniss Cowl (inspired by the one seen on the character of ‘Katniss’ in Catching Fire)

The PANEM Wrap is probably my closest version of the cowl worn in ‘Catching Fire’. As much as I need/want to have my neck covered (hence my first two versions) I just couldn’t get away from the chunky, funky coolness of the ropes on the cowl worn by Katniss in the movie.

Pattern errata: Pattern says you can use size 17 straight or circular needles, but it has been brought to my attention that the straight will not work on the change-over from knitting in the round to back and forth due to the number of stitches.

I love the unexpected funky look of the elbow slit mittens that I found on one of the large yarn company websites. What I didn’t like is that so often those companies underestimate a knitters desire to challenge themselves, try something different or to want a finished product that doesn’t look like it was handmade.

I was inspired to write this pattern by a beautiful scarf that I found online. As someone who knits, I totally stand behind the cost of the online beauty (in the hundreds), but, as someone who knits, I often would just rather knit it myself and have the loveliness for a fraction of the cost :-)
