I have invested as much as I can afford into buying red yarn to make hats for our non-knitting community members. If you would like to support my work, please consider purchasing this pattern or donating to my PayPal link. I sincerely appreciate anyone who supports my work. Thank you for your generosity!
This hat was designed in solidarity with protesters around the world resisting ICE’s unconstitutional brutality in our communities. It is inspired by the rød topplue hats worn in Norway during WWII to resist Nazi occupation. Wearing them is a “quiet” protest against violence and discrimination and a reminder that we are not alone in these tough times.
This hat is knit from the top down which makes it easy to modify the size and length. I have specified the yarn, needles, and gauge for the sample size in the photos, but any yarn, needles, and gauge can be used. I have included simple instructions on how to modify this pattern to suit your preferences.
Size
To fit a 22”/ 56 cm circumference head with 2.5”/ 6 cm negative ease.
Length: 11.25”/ 28.5 cm from pointed tip of hat to brim.
The stitch and row counts in this pattern are specific to this size, but the instructions are also written so that any size can be made with any gauge. I give instructions and tips on how to modify the pattern for your desired size and length.

Gauge
20 sts x 26 rows in 4”/ 10 cm
Gauge measurement is based on knitting in the round. Gauge can differ when knitting flat versus in the round. Measure item flat after blocking.
Construction
The hat begins with a Disappearing Loop CO. Sts are distributed evenly over Magic Loop needles and alternating increase/knit rounds are worked until you have the recommended or desired number of sts. The hat is then worked straight until it is 2.25”/ 6 cm shorter than your desired length. The remaining length is worked in 1x1 ribbing and the hat is BO with the Tubular BO method. I-cord sts are picked up and knit from the tip of the hat and your I-cord is worked to your preferred length. Finally, you make your tassel and attach it to the end of your I-cord.
