Ulmus americana or American Elm is an extremely hardy tree that can withstand winter temperatures as low as −42 °C. Its bark has intricate fissures that provide interest through the long, cold winters of Canada. The Ulmus hat portrays these characteristics using twisted stitches along with detailed cabling.

The Lane Hat is a simple, meditative knit that works best with a semi-solid or LIGHTLY speckled yarn. The pattern can be modified to fit any sized head using any stitch count that is a multiple of 6. Fits include folded brim or flat brim, fitted, slouch and super slouch.

Drumbeg Provincial Park is located on Gabriola Island overlooking scenic Gabriola Passage. Drumbeg offers excellent views of the Strait of Georgia and the Coast Mountains on the Mainland. The park contains a kilometre long sand and pebble beach with striking sandstone and conglomerate rock formations, which can be seen at low tide.

Winter on the east coast of Vancouver Island is damp. A light, but insulating scarf is a necessity to endure the cool, creeping air on forest walks or beach cruising. The honeycomb garter stitch gives the scarf a double layer trapping air and warmth around the neck.
