Knitting: Earflap Hat
A hat for cold winter days, Hilgard features stranded colorwork in thick yarn, earflaps to keep your ears toasty warm, and braided ties to cinch those earflaps down on windy days. Small sections of stranded colorwork worked flat are used to integrate the pattern on the hat into the earflaps, and a crocheted edging keeps the brim from rolling.
Knitting: Headband
Perfect for using up scraps of yarn leftover from other stranded projects, this headband only uses 15 g of each color! It features a traditional pattern edged with Latvian braid. The color pattern is quite easy to follow, being geometric and regular. The colorwork pattern is charted. Detailed instructions for working Latvian braid are included ...

A shawl knit with an open, airy mesh, perfect for tying around your neck on a cool day. This pattern uses a lace pattern that forms intricate looking diamonds, but the knitting isn’t too complicated - all wrong side rows are purled, and the pattern is quite repetitive and logical to keep track of.
Knitting: Beanie, Toque
A pattern with sizes from child’s through men’s, this hat uses a stitch pattern modified from one found on the Dura-Europos fragment, a several thousand year old piece of cloth found on an archeological dig near modern-day Syria. This fragment may have been knitted or may have been created using a different technique called nailbinding. Either ...
Knitting: Beanie, Toque
A stranded hat made with soft, fuzzy alpaca, in colors to brighten up dreary winter days. This hat uses a simple two-color pattern and has very easy decrease rows that can be started at any point to customize the length of the hat. Alpaca lacks the elasticity of wool, so this hat is made to be loose fitting.
Knitting: Beanie, Toque
A cabled and twisted hat with decreases that form a star pattern on the crown, this hat is a great project for those natural, wooly yarns spun by small farms and spinneries. It is knit in the round at a fairly tight gauge to yield a fabric that is warm and sturdy.
