The Buggiflooer Mitts is based on a traditional Shetland design with a patterned cuff which is folded over the ribbed section creating a double layer around the wrist. I designed the Buggiflooer Mitts to match the Buggiflooer Beanie (the Shetland Wool Week hat in 2023, the year I was the Patron).

Buggiflooer Beanie

Stjarna Smucks are knitted flat from the back of the foot, down and under the heel. Stitches are cast on over the instep and the foot is worked in the round to the toe. A three-needle cast-off is worked at the toe. The sides of the heel are then seamed closed, and the ribbing is worked at the same time as stitches are picked up from the smuck.

Shetland lace was the mainstay of the Shetland knitwear industry during the nineteenth century prior to the popularity of ‘Fair Isle’ knitting. New shell is a traditional and simple lace pattern that is easy to knit. Both of my grandmothers knitted new shell scarves in the 1970’s and they remain popular today.
