Seedeaters are little songbirds that flock together and feed on…well…seeds. The slip stitches in this hat, with their colorful purl bumps that stand out from a Stockinette background, look like they could be mistaken for snacks by one of these adorable birds.

I’ve always marveled at the drawings by the 19th century naturalist, biologist and artist Ernst Haeckel who illustrated, in gorgeous detail, hundreds of animals and sea creatures.

Mothwings is a sweeping shawl that blends five colorways in a fade that radiates in several directions. An overall, simple slip-and-Garter pattern crosses the fade, creating a deeply textured, woven appearance. The moment I laid eyes on the golden green that Dragonfly Fibers dyed for this piece, I was transported to a dappled summer forest. The highlights within this lush green look just like shifting light among evergreens and brush. The contrasting pink made me think instantly of the wildflowers that grow near my home in the Pacific NW.

As a little girl, I believed the moon followed us on our long car trips to the Jersey shore. In a world without seat belts, I’d lay in the back window of the station wagon and look up in wonder, the moon gliding overhead.

Dogtooth is an ancient word for the houndstooth design that this slip stitch pattern somewhat resembles. This Aran weight wool knits up quickly and provides squishy warmth, and The Dye Project’s colors are full of beautiful shadows and light.

Hyperspanner is a long crescent created completely in Garter Stitch that allows two gorgeous yarns to play off of each other and shine. Hyperspanner is a name for a Star Trek tool that sounds much more majestic than “wrench” and seems to be apt for a shawl that consists of a large span of wild colors.

Power Lines is designed to highlight those small leftovers or oddballs of gorgeous fingering weight yarn you may have around.

A quick knit and surprisingly warm! These mitts are worked in the round in a heavy fingering weight yarn, in a textured pattern that works well for tonal colorways. simple, one-page pattern

A festive, silly table runner - super fun to knit in color changing yarns. It looked to me like a candy-land road or an elf-sized red carpet. Knit as long or short as you like, based on your target table.

I designed these little bracelets for a friend who edited my novel. After trying many, many yarns, gauges and cable combinations, this simple, chunky pair turned out to be just right. The little whale you see on my wrist is a symbol from my book and reminds me of what Beverly has helped me achieve.

Double Garter stitch is a classic stitch pattern that gives a 3-D pleated look. Worked sideways, the shawl is a big crescent. It incorporates Double Garter to give a rich texture to the sweeping edge.

Inspired by research for my novel Beautiful Wreck, a time travel Viking love story.

This squishy little square uses slip stitches to create a radiating design. When sewn together as a blanket, the slips create a diamond motif that stands out from the fabric and reminds me of the punched tin ceiling tiles in my grandmother’s kitchen.

Simplicity and air! This is a meditative knit that celebrates beautiful yarn and relaxing, easy knitting.

Gauge is important! The shawl is designed to be petite - just 13”/33 cm down the back. If your gauge is too tight, you may end up with a beautiful kerchief.

Simple garter pattern shifts through combinations of 5 colors, joining an endless loop of color progression.

Gauge should be 22 stitches per four inches. It is printed as 38 in the pattern. Exact gauge is not critical.

This squishy Garter Stitch blanket is highly adaptable to almost any weight yarn and monochromatic or wild color combinations. It’s especially suited to self-striping yarn when used with a neutral main color. As I knit this blanket, its tilting lines and colors made me dream of pale frosting and a teetering chocolate cake.

When we were kids, my sister, brother and I got our hands on a piece of mica—a rocky mineral—and were fascinated with splitting it along its iridescent planes.
