This is a collection of 4 lace scarves/stoles adapted from some of my early lace shawls.

A collection of 4 somewhat challenging patterns that can be worked as stoles or scarves. 3 of the designs are for 2 colours, and 2 are parallelograms. These patterns are worked both sides, though most have a rest row every 4th row except Alchemilla, which is simpler in other ways instead.

Nottingham is a fancy pants hooded cowl (or ultra-mini cloak) inspired by the snazzy folks of the Middle Ages. (Basically, a more elaborate cousin of Sherwood, with more everything.)

Sherwood is a hooded cowl inspired by the hip of the Middle Ages, as oft seen in medieval illustration & paintings. This practical and elegant garment was worn from the 12th to 15th centuries in much of Europe, and can be just as functional and stylish today!

The Idle Gardener is a flexible, crescent shaped shawl with a textured wildflower body transitioning gently into an elaborate botanical lace with some fun new stitches to learn. Both the yoke and the lace can be repeated indefinitely, and bound off wherever you please, allowing the shawl to be worked to any size or yardage.

Siren Song is a densely textured, semicircular shawl with a flowing scale pattern. The design begins with a central scallop shell rib, then becomes a gradually expanding double scale textured lace with twisted rib detailing, and ends in a swooping fishnet mesh.

Plan Bee is a long parallelogram or slanty rectangle designed for playing with colour & bias. The design can be made as a scarf or widened into a stole. The pattern is worked in stripes, alternating between wide stripes of stockinette lace and overlaid with garter lines with lifted stitches.

Noughts & Croasters, (a.k.a. Tic Tac Toasters) are a set of double-sided coasters with noughts on one side and crosses on the other.

Sylvatica is relaxing semicircular shawl of expanding leaf lace with a hint of texture to give it depth. The design begins with a central flower then flows into a series of expanding leaves, gradually opening into the tracery of winter branches, before returning to the new leaves of spring.

Where the Mountain Meets the Moon is a semicircular shawl with a little bit of everything: lace, texture, cables, and some Estonian gathered stitches.

Chromatella is semicircular shawl with a little bit of everything: lace, texture, cables, and some Estonian gathered stitches. The design begins with a central flower (yellow, like the tiny Chromatella waterlily), flows into elegant twisted lily pads, and then into variations of the Estonian Lotus stitch, reminiscent of the floating heart lily.

Tyndyrn is a textured semicircular shawl of flowing lace and deep cables, inspired by the magnificent lace of Herbert Niebling, and the soaring gothic arches of Tintern Abbey. Tyndyrn is the Welsh name for the site.

Nucifera is an adaptation of a small doily by the amazing Herbert Niebling, that I’ve modified and expanded into a chart that can be repeated to make a shawl of any size.

Eoan is a top-down triangular shawl that begins with small, textured hearts and evolves into flowing lace. Both parts of the shawl are textured with purl columns, leading into a beautifully textured lace edge based on a secret code lace stitch created by Naomi Parkhurst.

Plan A is a long stay-on parallelogram (slanty rectangle) designed for adventure and fun!

Viridine is a striped semicircular shawl overlaid with a cable motif that radiates from a central flower into a star shape.

Alines is an asymmetrical triangle designed to play with colour by separating short row colour blocks with bands of stripes. The stripes are perfect for a variegated yarn coordinated to show off the other two colours.

Cynefin is a flexible crescent shaped shawl with an elegant lace that can be worked in 2 different ways.

Tiny Birds is an asymmetrical triangle wrap with an unusual stitch pattern designed to interweave the colours of a busy variegated yarn in fascinating ways. It begins with a crossover stitch which is later contrasted by a unique 2 coloured lace mesh edge which then breaks up the variegated colours and allows each to shine.

Annwyl is a semicircular shawl worked in stripes overlaid with a double cable motif edged by a lace mesh that gives a flower shape to the design. The lace is also worked in stripes and uses slipped stitches to blend the stripes into an open mesh. It is constructed of nine wedges radiating out from the starting point and gradually widening.

Goldenoak is a textured triangular shawl designed to play with colour. A relaxing stockinette start is broken by occasional garter ridges is followed by a decorative introduction of the second colour. Penumbral is an opulent semi-circular shawl designed to play with colour. It begins with a wavy fan & chevron yoke which expands out to form petals edged with mesh. These flow into a section of mosaic with slipped stitch cables floating over the top, leading into the textured lace edge.

Earthbound is a striking semi-circular shawl with a simple pattern of dotted rays expanding out through the yoke, bordered by a textured pattern of woven lines, and edged with a unique 2 coloured lace mesh.

Karuna is a choose-your-own-adventure texture and lace triangle. The shawl begins with a zigzagging knit & purl pattern which transitions into one of Naomi Parkhurst’s elegant laces, which can be made to either ripple, echoing the zigzags of part 1, or to make flowing diamonds that echo the start of the shawl.

Igni is a striking shawl with a simple pattern of dotted rays expanding out through the yoke shifting to a textured stitch which transitions smoothly into rich lace. 


Line of Sight is a striped asymmetric triangle with a difference - the stripes change direction depending on your point of view.

Lotus Mandala is a striped semicircular shawl overlaid with a double cable motif radiating into a star or flower shape from a central point.

Zeon is a striking semi-circular shawl with a textured pattern of radiating lines making hearts which flow and expand toward the outer edge of the shawl.

Moonrise is an ornate crescent shawl which begins with a textured pattern of twining lines and eyelets, and evolves into a beautifully intricate lace.

Odd Trails is a quick mosaic cowl in DK weight, designed to keep you warm on your wintery wanderings. It’s been designed as an introduction to mosaic knitting, in collaboration with Hunter Valley Wool Store.

Wholehearted is a flowing semi-circular shawl with a textured pattern of all over hearts which grow and expand toward the outer edge of the shawl.

Maitri Mandala is a striped semicircular shawl overlaid with a star-like cable motif radiating from the centre. The star is gradually shifts into a sequence of unique striped, slipped stitch laces.

Earthstar is a fun striped semicircular shawl overlaid with a cable motif radiating from a central point in a star shape.

Koi Pool is a strikingly simple and elegant wrap, designed to use two contrasting colours to spectacular effect.

Lyrata is a flowing semi-circular shawl with a mesmerising textured lace pattern which expands as it ripples toward the outer edge.

Alchemilla is an asymmetric triangle designed to show off a subtle variegated yarn, or to create striking texture from a solid colour.

Celandines is a striking asymmetric shawl which contrasts a simple garter body and twisting cable vine with an elegant textured lace. 


Triangulines is a curved asymmetric triangle which blends 2 colours in 3 different ways to create a simple but striking effect. 

The shawl is approx half knit and half purl, however the changeover from one to the other occurs at the marker points instead of the end of the row.

Miramis is an adaptable crescent shaped shawl. It’s elegant textured body of cable lines over reverse stockinette flows into the lace in a series of arches, and both the body and lace sections of the shawl can be worked to any size, making it very easy to customise size. 


Leafwood is a minimalist asymmetric triangle shawl, curved for stay-on shaping by a widening border of short row stripes. A decorative cable runs diagonally through the middle to highlight the contrast between the stripe border and the body of the shawl, and was inspired by the spine structure of leaves.

This is a redesign of The Peacock’s Tale with a bit of Radiata thrown in. It’s still a crescent shape, but with a new construction that avoids the dreaded cast on hump which some knitters experience. There are also fun new transitions between the later feathers, and a new ending with a quirky twist.

Spiralsea is a warm and cosy triangle with bold oceanic lines, designed to hug the body and keep out even the sharpest sea winds.

Zagonal is a half-hexagon-ish wrap with the bind off in the middle instead of at the end!

Jetlag is a cuddly asymmetric triangle featuring a graphic mosaic pattern within a classic border. It is designed to be much simpler to knit than it looks, and easily memorised so it can be knit on autopilot during those fuzzy jetlagged hours of fill in time.

Where the Forest Meets the Sea is a classy, semi-circular lace shawl. It is inspired by my favourite place, and from peering at maps of jagged places like Norway and Scotland, and marvelling at how the mountains ripple down to the coast, and streams become rivers on their way down to the sea.

Verdigreen is an eye-catching textured triangle designed for having fun with colour and contrast.

Designed with some sneaky little quirks which make it easier to knit, The Trickster is a beautifully satisfying shawl that looks much more complicated than it is.

Marascani is a mostly garter triangle, worked sideways in there-and-back sequence that resembles symmetry while creating a jaunty sideways pinstripe.

Bewilderness is a crescent shaped shawl in a satisfying combination of stripes and lace, with a striking cable and slipped stitch motif over a snuggly garter base. It is edged by a unique and elegant lace which can be worked in a series of adaptable modules.

Filigreen is a triangle shawl with a difference. Simple stripes are overlaid with lines of slipped stitches and mini-cables to create a dynamic and eye-catching filigree effect reminiscent of other places and times.

Darwinian is an asymmetrical triangle worked sideways with a body of garter edged by a wide band of beautifully textured lace, and a twisting cable edge.

Boomerangle is a long asymmetric triangle designed for experimenting with colour and contrast. The body of the shawl is worked sideways, alternating between garter and stockinette to create a slightly shot fabric, which are intersected by strong slip stitch lines.

Canyonlands is a deep garter triangle shawl designed to play with long colour run yarns. The body of the shawl is worked sideways in a variation of Please Mind the Gap. Keeping the garter stitch relaxed (preferably to the point of being semi-comatose) gives this wrap a lightness and drape that make it very easy to wear.

Pteryx is an asymmetric triangle designed to show off a variegated yarn with an engaging combination of garter and stockinette.

First, Love is a deep, rippling crescent meant for playing with colour. Perfect for pairing a solid with a set of mini skeins, some variegated yarn, or putting some leftovers to good use.

Kaleidos is an elegant star shaped shawl. Worked from the nape in radiating wedges, it has lace panel inserts that form kaleidoscopic patterns at the increase and decrease lines within the star shape.

Integrate is an adaptable boomerang shape in garter, designed to integrate colours in fun ways. 
The body of the shawl is worked sideways in a ‘choose your own adventure’ style. Play with solid blocks of colour, or stripes with an eye catching grid pattern created by slipped stitches.

Horton Who is a relaxing asymmetrical triangle designed to play with two or more colours in a simple, fun way. 
The body of the shawl is worked sideways. The dot stripes can begin on any 4th RS row, and can be used in a number of different ways to create a variety of effects.

Draconis is an elegant semi-circular shawl inspired by Edith Nesbit’s wonderful collection of short stories The Book of Dragons. Hidden in the design you can find scales, claws, teeth and gouts of fiery breath. :)

’Twas brillig and the slithy toves

Solitude is a beaded lace shawl of an almost Faroese ‘tri-escent’ shape, and is a variant of the crescent shaped This Delicious Solitude, thanks to the wonderful Kabuli1. It begins as an extra wide triangle shape with an intriguing spine panel, then transitions elegantly into a gently rounded curve of intricate lace.

Don’t Panic is a generous semi-circular shawl designed as an MKAL. It has lots of mostly harmless lace, beads if you want them, and an ending that can go on and on and on.

This design is a remix of the triangle shawl, Robin in the Leaves, and was inspired by revisiting one of my favourite childhood books while reading it with my own children.

Mechanical Mermaid is a versatile deep triangle, with subtle shaping which makes it perfect for snuggling, or draping with flair.

Espaliered is a textured, asymmetric triangle. The body of the shawl is worked sideways, and alternates between bands of lace and sections of striped garter with slip stitch lines. This creates an intriguing, textured effect reminiscent of branches trained to grow across a garden wall. 



Treeangle is a top-down triangle inspired by many magical hours walking in tall forests. It has a lightly cabled lace, with optional subtle beading, and an unusually constructed trunk for a spine.

Iridescence is an asymmetric triangle with bands of lace along the long edge, designed specifically for Earthfaire, in conjunction with The Unique Sheep.

Solitude is a beaded lace shawl designed with the joy of quiet time in mind. Sometimes there is nothing more enjoyable than curling up with some beautiful yarn and intricate, but not too complex, lace.

Troubadour is a top down shawl of alternating waves of knit lace and contrasting garter bands. Perfect for playing with colour, it creates a lyrical, rippled effect, somewhat like the chorus and refrain of a song.

Peace and Quiet is a delicate, crescent shaped shawl, designed with quiet moments in mind. Sometimes there is nothing more enjoyable than curling up with some beautiful yarn and intricate, but not too complex, lace.

Rosales is a simple crescent designed with versatility in mind. A choice of three design elements can be worked in any order on a plain crescent background, creating a myriad of possibilities.

Foliata is inspired by the various spiral forms occasionally seen in certain types of plants. Whether you’re currently enjoying the beginnings of summer, as we are here now in the southern hemisphere, or gazing out the windows at bare branches and dreaming of spring, foliage is something to be savoured.

Illumine is inspired by the curious rays sometimes glimpsed around a source of light viewed through half-closed eyes, a camera lens, or gaps in the clouds. Heart of Winter is a gently heart shaped shawl which begins as triangle with an unusual spine and subtle texture stitch in the body, then evolves into a crescent shape of decadent lace, with optional purl columns and beads for the true lace addict.

This design was inspired by the longing we often feel for things out of season. Like for sunflowers in the depths of winter, or sunshine on a rainy day. The name ultramarine, used for a deep blue pigment, comes from the Latin ultramarinus, meaning ‘beyond the sea’, because the lapis lazuli that was originally used to make the pigment came from far distant lands.

Robin in the Leaves is a triangular shawl with an intriguing spine construction, and a subtle texture pattern which evolves into an unusual lace edge.

Overtones is the perfect cowl for sped and colour play.

Helianthe is an interactive crescent shawl which can develop in a variety of ways. The name is a derivative of the sunflower subfamily, Helianthus.

Around the Bend is a elongated triangle with a simple texture suited to dramatic yarn combinations. It was inspired by the chevron signposts marking the approaching bend on many a windy road.

Acute Triangle is a quirky triangular scarf that can be extended to any size, wrapped round and round for warmth, or left to dangle elegantly over the shoulders.

Feeling Groovy is a zigzagging triangle which invites the knitter to get a little creative.

Gallivanter is a dynamic zigzagging triangle for fingering to worsted weight yarn.

Paintmixer is a quick garter cowl for chunky or super bulky yarn, designed for knitting on the go, or in a hurry, and having fun with colour.

Mirador is the Spanish word for lookout. This zigzaggy crescent was dreamed up on a lookout high up in the Sierra Nevada, looking out across row upon jagged row of mountains, towards the sea. To me, this view looked very like a crescent shawl. :)

Far and Wide describes the shape of this boomerang not-quite-a-scarf-not-quite-a-shawl shape. It has long arms to wrap around for warmth or dangle casually over a shoulder, and a fun bandit style V neck for extra warmth where you need it.

This is striped garter triangle is designed to be easy and flexible enough to knit on the go without having to refer to a pattern. The ‘gap’ detail at one edge of the triangle forms an interesting variation or a subtle boat neck collar, depending on how it is worn.

Radiata is inspired by the spiraling form in the centre of a sunflower, and by an absurdly cheerful cake of yarn which was a gift from a friend, like a sunbeam in the grey depths of winter.

Renaissance Fan was inspired by the fascinating feather fans of the 17th century.

The Shawl of Many Shapes is 4 patterns in one. The same stitch pattern has been used in 4 different shapes giving the knitter a choice of crescent, 3/4 squareish-circle (aka squircle), triangle, or ‘cresangle’. Or all of the above.

A bird’s song is made of many parts pieced together, arranged and rearranged continually to make a new song every time. This design follows the same idea, with parts that can be assembled in a variety of ways to create a new shawl every time.

Leaves at First Light is a shawl for budding dryads and elves needing a warm layer to wrap around shoulders in the early morning while creeping off to begin the day, or of an evening while lingering in the cool under the trees or gadding about the forest.

This is the first design in the Wanderlust set, a series of designs created while travelling around in a campervan for a year. Buy any 4 patterns in the set, and the 5th will be free.

Slow Dance is an evolving design with a set of frisky quick steps and graceful slow steps which can be worked together in any number of ways.

Kindred Souls is the second design in the Love is like friendship caught on fire series, shawls inspired by phases of love.

Summerblossom is a bonus pattern for the Leaf Cycle Collection in celebration of the leafy KAL being held in the Nimble Knits group throughout the month of May 2015.

Sleeping Princess is the third design from the Little Book of Fairy Tales and is two designs in one - one for the princess, one for the veil enchantment that made her sleep and dream for so many years.

Another design from the Little Book of Fairy Tales, this time centred on the role of the Fairy Godmother, through the story of Ashputtel, a Cinderella-ish tale where role of helper is key.

East of the Sun, West of the Moon is the tale of a hero’s journey to rescue her lost love, with the help of the four winds, and her own kindness and good sense. It is the first in a series based on archetypes in fairy tales.

There moments in life when a new love comes along from out of the blue and sweeps us off our feet. Sometimes this love is a person, other times it might be an idea, a book, a skill or even a craft project.

Dragonflight is the companion to its fellow draconic neckwarmer, The Dragon’s Tale, here adapted to become an elegant shawl. Or perhaps, dragon wings. After all, dragons like to fly.
